No, it isn't the same. This one is false, and not really up for debate.

I don't feel like debating the St. Paul's thing again, but I can can promise you the REC thing is more than a myth. For some reason people think is it this high level club, when in all reality it is like TAF. People like to think Alabama harasses players but it is hard to do when there is a strong Auburn, Ole Miss, and Georgia influence. If that were the case these wouldn't be the first players in over a decade to go to Alabama. The all-state and D-I players in the athletic program have gone to Ole Miss, Duke, Auburn, South Alabama, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Navy, Houston, Rice, UAB, Louisville, Troy, Georgia, Illinois, Birmingham Southern, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Kentucky, Central Florida, and LSU over the last decade. See a pattern, see a school missing? ;)

The other two money schools with a large REC influence are McGill and UMS. UMS has two players at Alabama, and they were going there no matter what. McGill has one player at Alabama, and two at LSU. The other top athletic programs such as Vigor, LeFlore, Blount and Williamson, etc have sent dozens of players to LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi State, West Virginia, and Oregon, among others. Just one went to Alabama. I could add the fact that I know almost all of the large boosters families, plus went to school and grew up with their children, and I can promise you it is a fun myth. A fun myth that is kind of insulting to my friends' parents and families - all of whom work hard and make a respectable living.

Mobile is just a different city and it isn't like the rest of the state (and there is a divide, as is confirmed by this douchebag - who coincidentally is the one that threw the punch in Montgomery). Mobile and Baldwin counties consist of mostly Catholic, alcohol loving, beach goers. The top Alabama graduates, booster and money wise, rarely keep up with or even know about recruiting. They aren't really Finebaum type listening people. They have Mardi Gras associations which they focus on a lot more. The summer isn't about recruits, rather some SKA tournaments but a lot of time deciding whether they are going to fish in the Bay Point, Biloxi, or Big Game tournaments - or take the family to Belize in the boat. Most get away from the office and go their homes on the Eastern Shore. In the fall, more often then not the only reason a lot of them go to Tuscaloosa is to eventually drive back down to their hunting camps, where they meet the same people that don't follow recruiting and get away from their wives. Whether it is shallow or not, they have a lot more things to focus on then their school's recruiting. A rough estimate of mine would put about half of the most wealthy graduates with children that go to Auburn. They let their children pick their school and wish them the best of luck and fully support them.

The Barron stories remind me of the ones that had all all the accusations about USC's illegal recruiting and how they made McKnight go to USC during the fall, when in reality they weren't even in town and he had been a silent commit since the summer.

Honestly, I could read these things all day long.

    Not on the internet. ;)

I was just jerking your chain my friend but it would be naive to think that Alabama boosters, whether they are REC members or just plain fans, wouldn't try to put subtle pressure on top notch recruits to attend their school. It would also be naive to think it didnt happen all over the country. We are probably guilty of the same thing in Louisiana too. Nobody is above that.

I know, it was just my annual PSA to others - sort of talking out loud if you will to people that believe the over the top stories like the one on TB. :)

What about Gerald McCoy and a throwback in Vince Young.

He actually signed with Arizona, but like you said he never lived up to the height and signed as a Free Agent with the 49ers.

Phil Loadholt just couldn't get qualified with us tried two seasons basically just like Jason Teague who had great size at 6'2 and speed.

Corey Surrency was another recruit we missed on last year. He was a 5 star JUCO WR that signed with Florida St to be close to his mom, who has cancer.

His interviews after his commitment were very interesting as he obviously loved everything about LSU.

He's expected to make an immediate impact at Florida St.

I'll tell ya what would be a very interesting question.

How many LA recruits have we missed out on that we really wanted? Other than McKnight that list has to be VERY short.
