This can't be for real...:dis: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/columnists/barry-jackson/story/870921.html
This is not illegal. The guy runs a mini version of rivals or scout. He's not doing anything different then they do by charging for the right to read interviews. I think there are a lot of changes ahead in the recruiting information area. In the not to distant future the landscape of how recruiting information gets disseminated will change. ESPN will be making a big push to compensate more and more parents by having their kids hold out announcing until signing day. I heard their goal was to get the top 50 players to wait and announce on TV. They will compensate the parents and limit anyone outside ESPN from getting info on their clients kids. We've created a monster market with the way people lap up each little tid bit of info and dissect every kids words. ESPN see's an income opportunity that nobody has fully developed.
Right. I certainly won't pay for that. In this economy, I don't see that market really taking off that way. People will pay a small cost for one service that offers information, but no way will it mushroom the way they may be optimistically expecting. And, I don't see 50 top players agreeing to this every year, either. It would have to be a lot of cash, and each player will have to decide if it is worth prolonging the recruiting stressors when they ARE decided solidly.
ESPN wouldnt be charging anything. It will be TV based and advertiser supported. They may not get 50 players now but they will get more and more every year. The compensation to the families will be enough to offset recruiting stress. Mushroom? Maybe not. Expand? Definitely yes. Nobody would have predicted 10 years ago that sites like Scout and Rivals would be awash in cash and generate the traffic they do. Recruiting information is far from an established business model. The industry is ripe for big time expansion into TV.
Well, you seem to be in the know on this. Thanks for the insight. I have mixed sentiments about it. From a big picture standpoint, I hate to see HS players exploited, and football/any sport more glorified than it already is compared to other more important things in life. However, being a sports and LSU nut, I will not be able to resist watching how the commits play out. I am sure I will end up reinforcing the market success.
