Didn't see this before. On July 19th, he signed a one-day contract to retire as a Chief. He was always one of those players I hoped would really break out. I have some of his football cards, I always signed/traded for him in Madden, and when he went to the Chiefs, I was pretty happy. He didn't have a stellar career, but 13 productive seasons isn't bad.
One season with the Saints (1999), 61 catches, 4 TDs (including a 90-yarder) in a season when the team went through 4 starting QB's. Don't remember why we got rid of him (he went to the Bears in 2000), but I think he could have been very productive opposite Joe Horn had we kept him. Nevertheless, 548 career receptions, 42 touchdowns and more than 8300 total receiving yards. Not bad for a guy coming out of a school that doesn't prepare its players for the NFL.
I can still recall the crowds chanting "Ed-E, Ed-E, Ed-E......" when he dropped back to field a punt:
Eddie will forever be know as the first LSU player to do what? No one will ever be able to do this again......
Eddie was the first LSU Football player to declare for the NFL Draft his Jr. year. I'm thinking Faneca was the second.
