The only team with a remote chance of passing Alabama at the 11th-hour is Oklahoma State should it beat 9-2 Oklahoma impressively this weekend, though it will take a near-universal about-face from the voters, who currently have the Cowboys fifth. (They're third in the overall standings thanks to the computers.) Bring up this possibility to an Alabama fan, and he or she will of course laugh in your face, pointing out first and foremost that Mike Gundy's team lost to Iowa State. However, if this were the NCAA basketball tournament, where the committee members speak of teams' "bodies of work," they'd be comparing the following two résumés (assuming an Oklahoma State victory this weekend): • Wins over current BCS Top 25 teams: Oklahoma State: 5, Alabama: 2. • Wins over current BCS Top 50 teams: Oklahoma State: 7, Alabama: 5. • Wins over FBS teams with winning records: Oklahoma State: 6, Alabama: 3. • Conference titles: Oklahoma State: 1, Alabama: 0. • Losses to Iowa State: Oklahoma State: 1, Alabama: 0. On paper, the Cowboys will have achieved more than the Tide. In real life, however, this is not a debate that's even being given serious consideration (at least yet) for one simple reason: Alabama has a track record; Oklahoma State does not. SEC teams win national championships. Big 12 teams, at least lately, do not. But let's see what happens Saturday night in Stillwater. Voters can be heavily swayed by last impressions. In fact, that's how this whole SEC domination cycle began, back when Florida jumped ahead of Michigan in 2006, warding off a potential Ohio State rematch. I'm not surprised to see the articles coming out this week, but Stanford? Really. Still, they are essentially in the same situation as Bama, so why not? I was wondering today if anyone from the Left Coast was going to speak up for them. Well, at least one has now.
Not to be a dirty rotten scoundrel ... but part of me hopes the Big 12 gets OU and Okie State together, and tells them to make it a game [believable] ... but make sure Okie State wins. If the voters won't go by the facts, then make sure that the facts are clear. Okie State, Big 12 Champion Bama ... notta!
I think other than ESPN there is a bias against the SEC and they will not vote an all SEC NC. We already have five in a row why cement number six for us. If Okie st wins i think they at least give them a chance.
The Stanford situation points out another flaw with BCS and the conference championships when a team that isn't remotely close to being the best in the conference gets to play for the conference title. Stanford was placed in the new Pac 12 north, which is being represented by two loss Oregon. Meanwhile, the Pac12 south representative is woeful UCLA, who just lost to USC 50-0 and fired the coach. With cheating USC on the sidelines, Stanford or Oregon are the two obvious best PAC12 teams. Stanford won't be conference champion so will suffer from the argument that if you dont win your conference you shouldnt be in the NCG. Of course, Alabama is doing quite well despite being in the same situation, which is ...curious. But Stanford would have been in a much stronger position if they had a game coming up this weekend against a top 10 team. Similar situation with LSU. The SEC championship is a sideshow this year and means nothing with Alabama getting a pass to the NCG. If Georgia wins, there will still likely be two SEC teams higher ranked in the final poll. Champions? Really? But lower ranked? And if LSU wins, but loses to Alabama in the NCG, then LSU will be conference champions (whoopee), but Alabama NC?
More Harris Voters agree... (todays BR Advocate) ... The final BCS votes and standings won’t be tallied until Sunday, but count an early shot across Alabama’s bow from KPEL’s Jay Walker in Lafayette, a voter on the Harris Interactive poll. Walker said on KPEL’s website that if Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma on Saturday he will vote the Cowboys No. 2 over Bama. He cites the strength of the Big 12 (rated all year by the computers higher than the top-heavy SEC), OSU’s wins over current BCS ranked teams (OU would make it five) and the unassailable fact LSU beat Bama. Even if Oklahoma State slips past Bama in the BCS overall computer ranking, I still don’t think it will get enough human voters from the Harris and coaches’ polls to side with the Cowboys. But the Pokes do have the last word, something the Tide will not have as it sits home awaiting its BCS fate.
If Okie State beats OU I think they're in. I've learned never to underestimate the intelligence and wisdom of the other fellow and I think when the voters take everything into account they will push OSU over Bama, for all the reasons listed above and especially the fact that LSU beat Bama in their house. I mean, what's left to prove?
The other conferences in the country don't want to look irrelevant. The power people around the country, like media executives, don't want the college football championship to be a regional thing. By placing two sec schools in the championship game you are sending the message that only the sec is relevant in the championship picture. This alienates the rest of the country and is bad for business. For this reason I feel that if there is any way possible a rematch of two sec teams won't happen.
