It's no secret that L.Porter is one of our best, if not the best, recruiters in our staff. With LSU consistently pulling in excellent recruiting classes the past few years, Porter has obviously had a large role in that. With that said, if he takes the HC or OC job at Memphis, how might that effect our recruiting in the future as well as our current commits? Does he take the job before NSD, causing us to lose commitments? Who do we have that can take his place? Can we get another great recruiter like Porter easily?
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? Good recruiters aren't that hard to find, what we need is coaches that can coach. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if we lost any or all of the current offensive coaches. From what I've seen the last two seasons none of them should be extremely difficult to replace.
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? If LP takes the Memphis job, which he should if it's offered, it will definitely be a blow to recruiting this season and beyond. He's the main guy with good connections in TX. Just think of all the recent TX talent that we've relied on. Hopefully he can be replaced with someone else who's a very good recruiter.
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? Who says we can't hire a coach that is just as good a recruiter to replace him? I doubt LSU misses a beat in recruiting no matter how many coaches are shown the door. What makes you think Porter is irreplaceable?
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? I missed the part where I implied he was irreplaceable. I said he's a very good recruiter and our main guy with TX connections. Everyone is replaceable, some more easily than others. I hope we get an even better recruiter if he goes. But I do think recruiting will take a hit without him. Just my opinion in a hypothetical situation, nothing more.
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? It would hurt this current class no doubt but it would have little effect in the long-run. We have coaches on the staff that have many ties in Texas including Les and we would likely target another great recruiter with Texas ties. Having great recruiters is a definite plus but LSU prominence and proximity to Texas is the main draw for these prospects. LSU was just fine recruiting Texas before Porter came over to LSU with Les.
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? I think Redskins DB coach is actually getting the job as Memphis HC but that still leaves Porter open towards OC. Personally, I'd like to see the entire offensive staff gone except Porter. I think hes actually one of the few guys on our staff that can actually recruit and coach. It wasn't his fault with the bad RBs this year, it was mostly o-line. The RBs did the most they could when the opportunities were there...
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? I don't know much about recruiting because I've never been recruited...(not even by the fraternities :bncry. It seems to me that the overall program is more of a draw than the personalities of the coaches. I'm guessing that academics is always more of a concern to the parents than the players. Most southern state schools are probably on par with each other...unless someone has a weird major like Chinese, or Photojournalism. The personalities of the coaches are important too. I would want to play for someone who's "cool" if I had a high school coach who was a real jerk. But these recruits are the stars of their teams and probably have never been in coaches' dog houses much so their high school coaches probably were nice to them. I'm sure most of the recruiters make good impressions on the kids and their parents or they would be eliminated quickly. They probably all flatter these kids egos equally so there's probably not a lot of difference there. I bet the biggest difference between recruiter is that some are better closers than others. Some may have a knack for knowing exactly when to ask for a commitment from the kids and their parents, but even in this regards, they all have to be good closers or someone else would be doing the recruiting. The head coach would come in to be the closer if one recruiter was weak in asking for the "signature". So if the schools are equal and the recruiters are similar, the big difference has got to be the program and where the player fits into it...especially playing time and the ability of the schools to put their players into the pros. I think this is way more important to the recruits than who's actually going to coach them or who is currently recruiting them. In other words, it's the program that makes the recruiter more than the recruiter makes the program. We'll be fine without Porter if he leaves. If not, we can always get Dale Brown to come out of retirement to recruit football players :thumb:.
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? Good post steve. In reality there are so many varying factors that go into HS recruiting it might make your head spin. It's different as to what factors into each kid's decision. A great recruiter is one who can figuere that out early and use it to his advantage. A great recruiter must be clever, personable, knowledgeable, adaptible, trustworthy, charming, etc. If a recruiter is truly great, he's the guy who can get the kid who grows up in Montgomery idilozing the Tide to sign up to be a Tiger. And have properly assessed the talent evaluation of the player so that he is what we think he is. Nobody is 100%, but IMO, LP is one of the better ones we've had in recent years.
Re: What happens if we lose Porter? How can you miss something you typed? That definitely implies that his replacement will not be able to do an equally fine job.
