what are the league rules how long does he have before he can become a free agent? Or do the Raiders have to let him go?
I believe that they have to release him. Elway threatened to play baseball if he wasn't released. I don't blame Russell for holding out. The raiders will suck the life out him and toss him aside. They are not going to commit to building a first class team around him. The raiders and chiefs seem to be where the old timers go to finish out their careers.
Wouldn't hurt my feelings to see them release him... He's doing the right thing. If they won't come off the cash to get him to come play, then he'll get it elsewhere. No matter what he's got a brilliant future ahead of him and he doesn't need the Raiders to get where he wants to be.
I'm almost positive that he would re-enter next year's draft, or be traded if they can't agree on a contract. This is classic absurd Raiders. The contract for the #1 pick is straightforward -- last year's money plus 8% or so, combine with QB premium of a couple million. That puts the right amount at $29M or so. I think they'll end up signing him in mid-September, which is bad news for Russell, and worse news for the Raiders. Amateurs.
Davis has shown repeatedly that he has lost touch with what it takes to be a GM in the NFL. He had his day but it has long since passed and the Raiders organization is showing the effects. I find it hard to believe after his many many recent failures that he hasn't stepped aside. Obviously "just win baby" means nothing to him these days.
To quote Lee Corso, "Not so fast my friends." The Raiders will retain his rights for some time. I think until he is eligible to become a free agent. I think his agent & the Raiders will reach an agreement before the start of the regular season.
I hate to tell you so... But, I had predicted something like this happening although I still think the Raiders end up signing JR. There's a reason why the Raiders has had poor success drafting QBs, and rely on veteran QBs. Even if it meant BQ falling, I'm still glad that the Raiders picked JR over BQ with their first pick. Now, I've never believed JR should have been the first pick, but I still hate to see somegbody's football career go down in flames before it even started.
Bitter, no more using that term on here. Your only point in doing so is to get under the skin of folk here.
