It was a perfect play call. Not only was it PA on first, they rolled Harris to the right and threw to a guy running a cross right. "It's a quality play that we like and that we feel gives our personnel the highest percentage for success."
Moscona said something interesting and I've heard Red say this as well but I think he meant something different, I'll have to let him speak to that. He said being Fournette is a once in a lifetime player and teams are loading the box, does it put the defense at a disadvantage because generally we are playing a tight end and a fullback, if LF gets past that first line, it's just him and a safety. And we see what happens when one guy tries to tackle Fournette. Are defenses doing LSU a favor by loading the box? Not because LSU can burn them with the pass, (which is what I think Red was referring to but I'll let him speak to that) but it puts the pressure on them to make a tackle quick because if they don't, Fournette is looking in his rear view mirror or up at the scoreboard on his way to the end zone.
those were the passes he was missing before last game. which may be why les didnt want to risk it. those passes become quick pick 6's if off. ask jarrett lee. and les aint having that even against the emus.
If in almost 10 years Les can't find a QB more than one season that can throw a 7 yard slant the QB might not be the problem, that's all I'm saying.
If teams are loading the box though a slant isn't really a pass you wanna throw. But if they back off sure. I don't think slants are really a part of a cam Cameron offense. I think the slant is predominantly used in west coast offenses.
No doubt if they load the box and miss at the first level he's off to the races. However that will be much less likely against better defenses. What did defenses do before Fournette? Oh yes, load the box just like they did with Fournette last season. Miles keeps LSU right on the edge of being a championship contender almost every season. However until he discovers the forward pass LSU will be just outside looking in. The sad part is that it wouldn't take much. Anything that closely resembles a passing game could push LSU over the top.
I'd be tickled to death with a west coast offense. Anything that includes the forward pass. A quick slant, a quick out, a screen to the RB, an RB or TE in the flat......ANYTHING! Just don't expect the combination of run 70% of the time and throw a hail mary the other 30% to get LSU to the championship game.
They don't do our running game a favor by loading the box unless we can throw it wider and longer than than they can double cover. When the backers and safeties crowd the line it makes it harder to block them all and let Fournette run full speed into the backfield. It's why we throw it, run the read-option, and the jet sweep--to spread them out and back them up so the line can make a hole. But if our 7 men can block their 8 men, then Fournette has nobody between him and the goal but cornerbacks with bad angles being blocked by receivers with bad attitudes. And the line has been good about blocking the 7 key defenders and ignoring the one that is to far away and too slow to tackle Fournette. There are going to be situations where the best play may be to put in 4 tight ends and a fullback and snap it directly to Fournette.
