Question - would it have been smarter for Florida to interfere on that last touchdown?

Saw this posted elsewhere... interesting to think about (to me).

Basically, instead of letting LSU complete that touchdown pass, would it have been smarter for Florida to interfere with Tolliver (worse than they did the play before the touchdown pass :)), so that Tolliver would not have a chance at all to make the completion?

The thought is that while LSU would definitely get at least one more play, there would be so few seconds remaining that LSU would either have to go for the winning touchdown without leaving any time on the clock for a field goal attempt, or kick a field goal to send the game into overtime.

Seems like the smart move is to force LSU into that type of "either/or" decision, instead of letting them have a chance to score a touchdown, and if it fails then kick the field goal.

I was thinking about this myself. IMO, I would have told them to do whatever they had to do to make sure we didn't complete a pass. Tackle them before the ball is thrown, for all I care.

agreed, especially if you can get away with it like on the first fade. Tolliver was raped like a prison bitch.

I have been thinking this too. It is very risky, though.

Okay, lets say that this was Florida's thought's from the start:

16 seconds left, 2nd and goal (3 yard line):

Fade to Tolliver - Defensive PI.

    Good Move

    • While you give LSU an extra down, this seems like the most creative way to force an incomplete pass. LSU loses almost a third of their time left, and they gain just a single yard. Knowing what we know now, with LSU doing the exact same play, this changes everything slightly. Lee had a practice pass, and Tolliver knew EXACTLY where the ball would be the second time.

11 second left, 1st and goal (2 yard line) - Defensive PI.

    RISKY MOVE

    • While, again, LSU has 6 seconds left now, the ball is now at the 1 yard line, and LSU has a choice: go for the win or the tie. The 2 or 3 yard line is VERY different than the 1 yard line when it comes to game winning situations. ,I know it wouldn't surprise me to see Les Miles go for the TD in this situation, because you now can implement a run play or QB sneak for just a single yard.

Put us on the 1 and Ridley runs over somebody on his way to the winning TD.

    Meyer knows this.

getting away with it is basically inconsequential and his point.

i didnt think about it but is a great thought. id say you tackle him regardless seems to be a win/win.

not sure my heart could have taken the anxiety of going for it on the final play. the damned review on the fake fg was enough as it was.

Im pretty sure the ball would be spotted on the 2. The rule is different in college.

This would have been a tough call for Les. Would have been an interesting decision for sure.

    damn strong answer

The correct answer is yes, he should have prison raped him again. I would have gone after his ankles and tackled him before he could catch it.

LSU would have either done a do or die from the 1 1/2 yard line or kicked the FG. I suspect it would have been the latter by the Mad Hatter.

Would've been the smart move. LSU gets 1st and goal at the 2 by rule, but no time, so they would've had to take the FG. Chalk it up to one of several brainfarts by Meyer in that game, like not anticipating the fake FG and not doubling up Tolliver on 3rd down after that corner had to interfere to prevent the TD on 2nd.

defensive interference would have been spotted on the 2 (i think) making it a tough call. thats a big difference when you're running the ball, which we would have for sure if we had gone for it.

one thing is for certain, les would have made it no matter the call. jasper may have completely jumped over the defensive line on another fake fg and slam dunked it thru the goal posts for all we know.

nothing would freaking surprise me at this point.
