Hate to betray my ignorance but what exactly is the difference between SS and FS? I've seen so much discussion about Jones at FS and Loston now on the team and he should be a future game changer at SS or FS. Apparently Jones has finally been moved to his natural position but was curious as to what exactly the different responsibilities are and as Jones is such a good athlete why should he not be able to be a productive FS. opcorn: signed, Coach Peveto:yelwink2:
I'm not an expert on the subject, but I'll give you what I feel the difference is. Both are similar and called safeties because on many plays they are responsible for the farthest area of field from the line of scrimmage. In other words, if all else fails, they need to make a play. But between the two, FS is more often the position that has the deepest part of the field. A lot of times a SS will blitz, or come into the box to protect against the run. In a Cover 2 scheme two men play deep to defend the deep pass, and these men are usually the safeties. In Cover 3, the 2 CBs and the FS are usually the deep men and the SS is either covering in man on a player, or what's called a "Robber" zone meaning he sort of roams the middle area of the field trying to read the QB. So the main difference is that the SS, when not covering deep, usually has a responsibility to help in the run game or a closer zone, whereas the FS usually is the last resort and covers the deepest part of the field to defend the pass.
Hope THIS and THIS and THIS helps. Sorry I couldn't just explain myself, unfortunately at work. Geaux Tigers, only a couple more days till we feast on some Huskies!
At it's most basic, the strong safety covers the strong side of the field and has the added responsibility of covering the tight end. But defenses have gotten more complex and try to be deceptive.
