I was just thinking the same thing. If we are sitting on a small lead, seeing Coleman and Ott to close it out wouldn't surprise me. My thought though is that saves Ranaudo for game 3 if needed.
i dont think theres any way you see ott or coleman tonight. ranaudo more than likely closes it out if we have a short lead late. but it all depends how the game is going. if its a shootout and a 12-12 game in the 7th, i might save the big guy. hes not a fast recoverer so bringing him in is a huge risk given his recent tired arm issues.
I would like to think that we could do this, but let's say we do throw Raunado in there for 3 innings and he gets hit, throws 60-100 pitches and we lose. Who starts tomorrow? Coleman threw nearly 100 pitches and had 1 day rest. Ross would have thrown 5-6 innings today, and Raunado threw a rough 3 innings and 60+ pitches. Then we are stuck playing Johnny Wholestaff tomorrow. I don't know why everyone is so scared of our pen. These guys have to be given a chance. Let Ross go 6 and then Bertuccini, Bradshaw, Jones, et al can manage 3 more. If it's not good enough, we have Raunado back tomorrow and then we have both Ott and Coleman available behind him. If that's not good enough, then we don't deserve to win it.
What if Coleman pushes it too hard, comes back on zero rest after throwing 6+ innings and gets hurt? What if he tears his UCL and needs Tommy John? Then potential recruits are going to wonder if LSU is going to abuse their arms before they even get a chance to make it to the majors. Then potential drafting teams are going to wonder if they should be taking LSU pitchers. Just because our season is over and Coleman is out of eligibility doesn't mean that we should be irresponsible regarding his health. You don't pitch a pitcher who just threw 6+ innings in 100+ degree heat on zero days rest.
If we can win tonight, there is no tomorrow. I'd keep Raunado ready to be a late reliever if he can get us the win. If it just ain't there, he'll still be available for tomorrow.
True, but 2 innings would not be anything that would cause a problem. I don't really think he will pitch. But if I'm coaching, and I need two or three outs and my bull pen is spent, I don't hesitate at all to bring him back in. Hell he is probably sitting on the bench the whole game praying for another chance anyway. Heart goes along way when it's inside a really good player. Plus any athlete that approches the game with fear of injury is pretty much worthless to his team. If they thought he or any other player was unable to perform, they would not risk it. Austin Wood threw 162 pitches for UT and he's the damn closer. I don't think asking a guy to come in and throw 30 the day after he threw 90 is that big of a deal in this circumstance.
coleman isnt pitching tonight regardless. 2 innings is plenty enough to ruin coleman on zero rest. luckily, mainieri is not you or augie garrido. he should be shot for letting that guy throw 13 innings/169 pitches. who said he was scared? its the coach's decision to protect his players. and thats what cpm will do here.
