There were rumors last year that possibly Charles Scott and/or jared Mitchell were possibly going to be given academic scholly's. Don't know if that ever came about, but it's obviously a situation in which coaches look to do. I must say, sure, every big-time program has their share of "so-so" athletes in terms of academics, but Miles has done a really good job of getting some of the top recruits--not only in terms of their football ability, but also in terms of their academic excellence. Scott and Jare Mitchell were both close to being 4.0 students and now Barksdale with a 3.5... In this class, take a look at some of these notable academic players: 2007: Barksdale 4-star DT, 3.5 GPA Davis, 4-star DT/DE, 3.1 GPA Jordan Hammond, 4-star TE, 3.0 GPA T-Bob Hebert, 4-star C, 3.4 GPA Josh Jasper, 2-star K, 3.3 GPA Phelon Jones, 4-star CB, 3.28 GPA Mitch Joseph, 4-star TE, 3.0 GPA Jarrett Lee, 4-star QB, 3.01 GPA 2006: Jacob Cutrera, 3-star LB 3.6 GPA Richard Dickson, 4-star TE, 3.7 GPA Troy Giddens, 3-star ATH, 3.4 GPA Jared Mitchell, 4-star WR, 3.8 GPA Charles Scott, 4-star RB, 3.8 GPA Mark Snyder, 4-star OL, 4.0 GPA 2005: Kyle Anderson, 3-star TE, 3.4 GPA RJ Jackson, 4-star RB, 3.2 GPA Lyle Hitt, 3-star DT, 3.0 GPA Darry Beckwidth, 4-star OLB 3.1 GPA
What about the two sports athlete....let's say Chris Jackson. Can he be given the baseball schol. and it free up one......or Holliday a track, etc.??
The problem with that is that baseball and track don't have as many scholarships like football and those programs usually have to give partial scholarships in order to fill out a team.
That isn't the problem. The rules state that all 2 sport athletes will use a football scholarship (assuming football is one of the 2 sports of course). They came up with the rule because the Bear over at Bama used to put football players on swimmer scholarships as a way around the rules.
I think a lot of people, including myself, were thinking that TOPS would be a huge advantage to LSU in securing additional players, but that hasn't panned out. TOPS must be started as an incoming freshman, it won't pay for a 5 year redshirt, it won't pay for your dorm room. I assume athletic scholarships pay for dorms. If you are a recruit and could get an academic scholarship not linked to TOPS, as opposed to an athletic scholarship, you would have to have a lot of confidence in your ability to remain above a certain GPA because most are contingent on keeping your GPA above a certain level, at least a 3.00 or higher. The athletic scholarship is a safer bet. Can someone verify that dorms are covered with athletic scholarships?
