I was saying the same then when we had Copeland line up as the tailback in the shotgun formation. I mean come on, at least give a small threat of a pass. It's already obvious that we bring JJ in to run the ball, but the formations give that away as well. I guess if they can't stop it then it doesn't matter...
In addition, the formation does nothing to add to making the play work. Executing the play relies almost solely on 4 players--the center, both guards, and the QB. The backs, flankers, TE's, etc. have little to do with the initial surge created by those players. So why tip off the play? Why line up in a formation where the LB's can concentrate on stopping the QB?
I still contend that against a better team, something else will be run out of similar formations. And of course, we're talking about the Bama game. Miles schooled Saban last year, though for the life of me, I cannot understand how Saban didn't know that Jasper was going to run a fake punt last year. He NEVER punted from that distance. Yet, the look on Saban's face was priceless as Jasper pranced down the sideline in front of him.
Instead of padding JJ's rushing TD totals, here's an idea: USE WARE! You know?! The battering ram of a running back we have that was cracking skulls the ENTIRE game?!??! Those that wanted JJ in the game when we're down in the redzone because of is so-called "added demension" of running it are getting what they want. And the defense isn't fooled. And in JJ's only pass attempt, he was terribly off the mark trying to hit Randall. Another reason that sneak was probably doomed to begin with (aside from it being obvious what we'd run with JJ in there in that particular formation) is that this was not one of T-Bob's best games for us. He got man-handled multiple times throughout the entire game; getting blown off the line by as much as 3 yards in some cases. We didn't get nearly enough push from the OL on that play and a stronger runner (i.e. Ware) would have been the better option than a QB, IMO.
I posted yesterday how I hoped PJ is back soon. If TB wasn't on his azz he was beat. Several times I noticed him left looking for some way to make it look like he was contributing to the play to cover his azz when they watch film of the game. I felt sorry for him- it was that bad.
Unfortunately, he gets pushed around alot. He is a very smart football player, but not very physical.
There's no doubt to me that it's all bravado on CLM's part. "Hey opponent, we are going to run a QB sneak. Try to stop us."
