The only real playing time that Flynn got before his senior year was half of the SECCG when Jamarcus was injured and the Peach Bowl when Jamarcus was still injured. These days, back up QBs rarely see the field in any of the college games that I watch. Not just at LSU (and I disagree with that being a wise thing, but it is what it is...)
Walk-on or not is irrelevant...He worked his way up ahead of the others. Something I wish more would do but I understand why young QBs rather pick up and leave and start fresh. Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't. I would rather a walk-on who works hard and gets rewarded than a scholarship athelte who didn't do enough or have the will to work through it.
Many teams have W/O kickers, when the games on the line, who do they call on? Paid recruiters sell a product. Like I said 19 of the 30 best high school QB's failed at the signing school. Not good odds when you figure the best 4 and 5* players. LSU has lost 1 real QB over the years that went on to do something other than at LSU Craig Nall. LSU tried to sign a recruit Lane, he ended up playing in the SEC, but as a TE.
Irrelevant. What major university thinks that only two scholarship quarterbacks is sufficient depth. That was the point. Its just a topic for discussion, chief. If it upsets you so much, go find another post. Or just have a good cry.
There is no reason that we can't endeavor to have enough scholarship quarterbacks AND eager walk-ons.
No, what's irrelevant is whether or not the 3rd-string QB is paying for school or not, but you obviously have no regard for that very simple line of reasoning. Is it that unthinkable that Rettig didn't turn out to be nearly as good as he was projected to be? I was excited when we signed him, but I also have the good sense to trust Cam emmeffing Cameron's opinion on the matter. And what, pray tell, do you suppose it is that I'm doing? You're either a terrible judge of emotions or only projecting your own... I'm still waiting for you to find me that school that would be in such dynamite shape if they were down to their 3rd-stringer taking snaps. I'll be patient.
No, I'm not letting you distract from the point I was making . . . depth. We are shallow at quarterback this year. We usually have four scholarship quarterbacks. If you think that walk-on quarterbacks are much more than practice arms and make up for poor depth, then sit back and watch Les and Cam recruit recruit more quarterbacks this year. Depth is more than who is third-string. It involves future sucession.
It's not like we set out to have only 2 scholly qbs on the team... 2 left for more playing time after being overtaken by freshmen qbs... Rettig was overtaken by a walk-on (if you go by what some are stating)... The coaches can't force the guys to stay if they want to leave... I would guess if Rettig changed his mind, he would still have a spot...
