We had five scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in 2011, amigo. Count 'em . . . Lee, Jefferson, Rivers, Randall, Mettenberger. You keep making this point and I get it. But depth is about so much more than who is third string. We should be deep enough to redshirt a QB or two and we would prefer to have a couple of upperclassmen stick around. We have to develop quarterbacks for the future, not just sit them on the bench and tell them to wait their turn. Why is it so hard for you to acknowledge that we are not deep at quarterback, not experienced at quarterback, took more transfers than we expected, and must rely on two young QB's, one of whom may just leave if he doesn't start? It's not a situation that the coaches wanted, is it?
Uh, OK. But what is your point? We have 10 or 12 defensive linemen to fill four slots. We have only two quarterbacks to fill a single very critical spot. Lack of an SEC-caliber quarterback cost us several trophies in recent years.
That "depth" at QB is an irrelevant term. Everybody wants their team to have four 5* guys lined up, but it ain't a reality for any of them. If you're very lucky, you have a capable back-up. That's simply not true. We have more than two QBs. What does this have to do with Rettig leaving? He was getting passed-up on the depth chart by walk-ons. You think he was going to bring us another trophy at some point?
Sure, pal. I predict that Bolden sees the field before any of the walk-ons. When was the last time a walk-on played at QB other than in mop-up? Hell, when did that happen? According to rumors. Can you show me an actual team depth chart that shows this? Has a coach stated this pubicly? Well, Flynn did after backing up Russell for three years. Rettig had four years of eligibility remaining. Do you think losing him is a good thing? Don't you think Cameron could have used him?
Oh boy, great thread! In my opinion the most divisive subject we can have this offseason. I think there is likely a middle ground somewhere but it's not likely to be found right now. In my opinion Rettig left because he was passed on the depth chart and knows her only has 4 years to play 3. And that isn't good of you have been passed by a fellow classmate and an incoming freshman. I'd bet my life that the coaches tried talking him out of transferring but failed. When you have a position whereby one guy gets 95% of the snaps, players who believe in themselves are going to transfer almost every time in this day and age. And he may well believe he can start elsewhere but also knows the players in front of him are more talented and/or better. He might feel he was not given a fair chance, many players feel that way however the coaches are usually justified on their decision. I have no problem with Rettig transferring, at the qb position opportunities are so limited compared to other positions. Even Spurrier didn't rotate 3 qb's. Damn, all this and I still havent made my point, I give up!
Five and how many really played? Who transferred out? I understand what you are saying, it is what it is. I know what was on the roster every year, but sitting the bench. I've said this before, kids don't want to wait, don't want to sit. Flynn was a 5th year Sr, how often do you see this? Sat and waited his turn. This is what college football has become, like it or not. Same with Jr and Soph moving out not making it to their Sr years. Leaving early for the draft. Every year that number goes up. One of the bigger gets this year was La'el staying, it may payoff for him. You don't offer kids just to stockpile players, at any position. You try and plan for this, all staffs do. Some things beyond your control happen. I someone doesn't want to be here, its not good for them, the staff or the team for them to be here. Best of luck to those who move on. Move on as a team and staff.
So you're saying they tried to keep him, some say Les ran him off. Cam wouldn't move him up the depth chart. Cam and Les wouldn't play him. As this is going on...... Gunner Kiel was coming to LSU, ended up at ND, now on his way to Cincy.
My point is that it was depth. Well, I don't like it and I don't think it can go on forever. The NFL is not going to be taking many more underclassmen than they are now. The experience of players who try to trade up colleges is mostly bad, see Gunner Kiel. Understood. I'm annoyed about things that were under Les' control. Like what you say to the media. He talked about an open competition at QB, then before Harris even appears at LSU, all of the public comments are about Jennings and Harris alone. And the press picks up on it. Not only does Rettig get no harmless lip service from his coach, but has to hear and see in the media how he is out of the race, has been passed over, and mostly ignored. A kid that will suffer silently about his position on the depth chart and tough it out can certainly want to find some greener pastures if he must face media ridicule before he has even gotten a chance to get on the field. Cam at least mentioned Rettig to the press. Les only did so if he was asked. That isn't the point. I'm talking about helping a kid want to be here. If college football is to be about anything more than transferring if you don't start, the coaches must make it happen some how. With three green quarterbacks this didn't seem like a kid we should have lost this early.
