Re: Chris Garrett I've got a feeling about this guy. I think he's gonna surprise some people in a few years.
Re: Chris Garrett I agree. I have felt that way for some time. Gut feelings do not equal on field success, but I am hopeful. I really like how he got the "LSU bug" once he came and visited. He will play with passion and leave it all out on the field for sure.
Re: Chris Garrett Entirely possible. You has the tools and with Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee and Russell Shepard on the roster, he'll be holding the clipboard with Crowton whispering in his ear for three years before he sees the field with low expectations.
Re: Chris Garrett You never know, Garrett could be the next Sam Bradford only bigger. I know he probably doesnt have the ideal running ability for Crowtons offense, but if he can throw the rock, then Id play him.
Re: Chris Garrett Where have I heard this exact same scenario before? Oh yes, the same "3 year plan" was supposed to go into affect for Jordan Jefferson when he signed in February 2008. Jefferson is the starting QB for the 2008 Peach Bowl.
Re: Chris Garrett The difference is that Garrett has more (and better) people ahead of him than what JJ had/has.
Re: Chris Garrett "..and after Ryan Perrilloux heads off to the FL, Lee will come in as a Junior" It has never worked the way people think. There is maybe 1 QB on our team with close to Garrett's arm strength - Jefferson, who at the moment is completing 42% of his passes. I hope he improves. You can't plan injuries, transfers or players getting kicked off the team. If you choose to believe Garrett is being brought in as a backup plan, go ahead.
Re: Chris Garrett I would say that many people think Flynn's career went as expected - backing up the higher rated prospect until he left early for the pro's. But you can never tell with these guys' development. Maybe Lee, Jefferson and/or Shepard won't develop, or as you mention - injuries also happen. I don't believe that Garrett is being brought in as a backup plan - no recruit really is when the depth chart is as young and unproven as ours is at QB. They're being brought in to compete for starting positions. However, I do believe that that taking 2 QBs in this class is so that we can develop depth at the position, which means somebody will be a "backup plan". I just don't think the coaches have any particular preference on who it is - its whoever doesn't outperform the others. And in this case, particular attention must be paid to the fact that Shepard is such an electric athlete that he could play other positions and could end up switching.
Re: Chris Garrett Plenty of First Round QBs were not big-time recruits coming out of high school. Rivals ranks Chris Garrett the #16 pro-style QB in the nation. Scout ranks him as the #28 overall QB in the nation. ESPN ranks him as the #26 overall QB in the nation. Compare to Matt Ryan: Rivals ranked Ryan as the #25 overall QB in the nation in 2003 and Scout ranked him as the #44 overall QB in the nation in 2003. Compare to Chad Pennington: the only scholarship offers he got out of high school were from I-AA schools: Middle Tenn State, UT-Chattanooga, and Marshall (Marshall went to I-A while Pennington was there). If you go research QBs taken in the First Round, you will find plenty of them that weren't expected to be future First Round Draft picks when they came out of high school. That's probably why I've read plenty of scouts who say that QB is the hardest position to evaluate when it comes to recruiting.
Re: Chris Garrett Flynn, Jamarcus Russell, Marcus Randall, Herb Tyler, etc. all were brought up the way you expect. The Perrilloux ordeal has really interrupted the cycle that has been kept in place since the departure of Josh Booty. For the most part, LSU has had solid (not really spectacular) QB play. From what I have seen, Lee's arm is every bit as big as Jefferson's, plus he has a much quicker release.
