US destroyer “Donald Cook” with cruise missiles “Tomahawk” entered the neutral waters of the Black Sea on April 10. The purpose was a demonstration of force and intimidation in connection with the position of Russia in Ukraine and Crimea. The appearance of American warships in these waters is in contradiction of the Montreux Convention about the nature and duration of stay in the Black Sea by the military ships of countries not washed by this sea. In response, Russia sent an unarmed bomber Su- 24 to fly around the U.S. destroyer. However, experts say that this plane was equipped with the latest Russian electronic warfare complex. According to this version, “Aegis” spotted from afar the approaching aircraft, and sounded alarm. Everything went normally, American radars calculated the speed of the approaching target. And suddenly all the screens went blank. “Aegis” was not working any more, and the rockets could not get target information. Meanwhile, Su-24 flew over the deck of the destroyer, did battle turn and simulated missile attack on the target. Then it turned and repeated the maneuver. And did so 12 times. Apparently, all efforts to revive the “Aegis” and provide target information for the defence failed. Yes agreed only way I can see that happening is they sent a highly directed beam of rf at the radar unit, and it caused an overload.
That weapon system is up and operating, but it is not automatically firing. When ships are in the Baltic they expect to be "harassed" to a degree, but this event seemed a little more strident than normal. Hard to tell if sanctioned or just a typical aviator out of control. The flights were NOT attack profiles, as an "attack" would never, ever have come so close, but would have launched missiles from a standoff distance. I don't think it is a very big deal. I am confident that certain people knew this was really a non-threat fairly early on. Uhmmmm... Aegis is really the system, the radar itself is called and AN/SPY something or the other.
I would approach that report with a large dose of skepticism. The power required to overload an Aegis system would be greater than can be generated on an aircraft. The Russians produce some lame BS claims about their capabilities. I will put this one down as such until proven otherwise. There are several reasons in addition to power generation to question this claim. First the energy required would cook things either on the plane or the ship. Second this could not be kept secret as the power emissions from testing would light up the EM spectrum. Mainly the Russians have been years behind us in miniaturization of electronics and other critical technology required to produce such a weapon. Also it's only been the last few years they have had money to spend for rebuilding their forces much less such a great leap forward in technology. This is Putin's rubbing Obama's nose in it and understanding there would be no consequences.
There is a significant difference between shadowing each other and the over aggressive acts noted here. These are dangerous and while don't come close to justify retaliation such as shooting them down, they show the contempt that Obama and by extension the US is held in by Putin. This is like a bully pushing a nerd down in grade school. He know he can because the nerd Obama wouldn't dare to do anything but take it. Look back to the worst days of the Cold War and neither side acted in such a manner.
