... Ole Miss is "tap dancing" on whether to admit him: http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007706220372
From the same article--------------according to his advisor------- But with the first day of practice rapidly approaching, Barnett said Powe will not wait for Ole Miss' commitment much longer. "I can promise you he'll be at some university come Labor Day," Barnett said. "I'd really like for it to be Ole Miss. But by God, they better step up between now and Monday." also--- If Ole Miss does not indicate its commitment to Powe, Barnett is confident other programs will. He said the list includes LSU, Miami, Auburn, and Alabama.
He is about 21 years old, and he is still in high school classes. I don't think this kid is college material at all. I'd like to see him out of the SEC west though. Saban will probably be at house promising him the world if he goes to Bama.
He probably isn't, but if he's really NFL material then I don't have a problem with the kid spending a year faking it in college before going off to the pros. I think Powe is really a sad story. He seems like a kid who was neglected by his parents and exploited by his schools while being given nothing to help him with his disabilities until it was far too late to do the most good they could have done. You don't need to go to college to get to the NFL, but it certainly is the easiest way there. I don't have a problem with taking him if his academics really are in order and if there's no chance of it coming back to haunt us with the NCAA. Plus, I *REALLY* don't want to see him at Bama, where (if he's really that good) he'd single-handedly take care of their biggest on-field problem.
i have a big problem with it. i applaud the kid for trying to become eligable, but it sounds like that is all he is doing and it is slow and difficult. now throw that kid into a college atmosphere where even with help he has to focus on other things. the kid is a major risk to graduation rates requirements by the ncaa. one way or another a school stands too great a risk of getting penalized when the kid either doesnt make the grades and flunks out or goes pro cause he cant handle the academics.
Sorry, I don't think anyone is going to let him in after seeing what his mom said last year. One sentence in particular made Powe a much bigger name than being just a standout defensive tackle recruit: "Jerrell really is a good child, but he just can't read." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=feldman_bruce&id=2912089
