I will look for the link, Red, but it came from a 20/20 interview this past week with Sen. Tom Coburn's office. ABC substantiated the report during the show's airing. Now, keep in mind that I am talking about new dependents on the system since 2008; not overall.
primarily the SSI-Disability portion. it's ballooned at an alarming rate, faster than any other social welfare program. the explanation that Coburn gave was that a lot of Boomers who were within five years or so of retirement and collecting SSI, which they've worked for and earned IMO, were laid off after the 2008 crash and because the job market has been so slow to grow many of them have elected to claim disability. The problem has been made worse by "disability doctors" who will sign off on things that have never been considered disabilities in the past.
LOL disabilities... you know how many people I see every day at walmart or other places pull up in their jacked up 3 foot high pick ups with "handicap" tags, get out and then bee bop up inside the store on their own two feet? Yeh disabled my ass.
Around here parents have beat the system. They get their kids diagnosed ADHD or Learning Disabled. Some even get disability for being fat and lazy I mean obese. Get the dr to sign off and Bam! Another check every month.

Disability is also where a lot of the old welfare folks ended up when welfare got reformed in the 90's. I'm an ardent defender of these programs but I can only defend them if we get the louts like this out of the system. It's time we start re-examining a lot of the disability cases and start weeding out this fraud. I don't think any decent person in this country minds helping someone in need until they can get back on their feet but none of us want to be taken advantage of and quite frankly, right now we are to some extent.
