The way things are now the AP has no connection with NCAA football whatsoever. It is a completely unassociated poll of sports writers. At one time it was part of the BCS calculation but it has since been replaced by the Harris poll.

The BCS is the NCAA's officially recognized system, that has been agreed to by all BCS division conferences, for determining a national champion.

The AP can give out any award it wants but it is equivalent to having a group of sports writers pick a NFL Champion other than the team that won the Superbowl.

Buckeye fan here (obviously from my user name); but, actually since the advent of the BCS title game, introduced last year, there can be no split. Before, the AP could vote #1 whomever they would like (such as the case with the LSU/USC split in '03); however, with the introduction of the BCS title game, the AP agreed to vote the winner #1.

Good luck LSU, I look forward to a great game.

Perhaps I was mistaken (in my previous post), but, I thought with the title game, the AP agreed to vote the winner #1?

i think it was understood that they would but in '03 they bucked it to try and feel relevant.

I still think its the same now.

Anybody got a link to this? I really am confused, since the crystal football trophy bears the American Football Coaches Association logo and the inscription "USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll" and "The National Champion." Compare that to the Div I-AA NC trophy, which doesn't show an affiliation to any particular poll, it simply says "The National Champion." IDK, maybe I'm splitting hairs.

OK, now THAT makes more sense. Thanks for the info, and I'm looking forward to a great game against a great team.

I stand corrected, the BCS is comprised of the Coaches and Harris, not, the AP. That being said, if USC beats the crap out of Illinois, and OU wins convincingly over WVU, and we have a close game, we could have another split NC. That being said, since the AP voted OSU and LSU 1 and 2, I highly doubt they would jump either USC or OU over either one of us.

In 2003 the coaches were required to vote the winner of the BCSNC game the champion per agreement. Even then, several coaches violated that agreement and voted USC #1 after the game (Lou Holtz among them, I believe). Maybe I'm being paranoid, but anything's possible when it comes to voters.

Talking with a WVU friend this afternoon, I explained my concerns of a split; and he told me that since the BCS introduced the title game last year, there could not be a split. After some Googling, I found his explanation to be false. the reason there was a split in '03 was due to the AP voting USC #1 at the end of the season and they were slighted by the BCS. After USC beat Michigan, the AP, crowned USC as their national champ.

This should not be an issue this year because the AP voted OSU and LSU #1 and #2 in their final regular season poll.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a well-fought, well-played game between our two teams.
