Oklahoma can beat West Virginia 85-3 and USC can trounce Illinois 184-14, but there will still only be one national champion. I don’t care what the AP, CFN or the Opelika-Auburn News says, the winner of the LSU – Ohio State is your national champion for 2007. The only team that could have any beef whatsoever is Hawaii if it beats Georgia in the Sugar. Everyone else, go unbeaten and then you can talk.

Those who don’t learn from the Irish are doomed to end up like them … Is Michigan not going after Les Miles harder because it’s trying to save money? Miles is now an elite, national title-level head college football coach who commands, and deserves, $3+ million a year, but Michigan athletic director Bill Martin might want a coach to take an I-get-to-coach-at-Michigan-yippee discount. Ask Notre Dame how that worked out when it low-balled Urban Meyer.

But he's absolutely, positively not going to take the Miami Dolphins' job ... Les Miles emphatically stated he was going to be the LSU head coach next year. Well, yeah, the national championship is in 2008.

Yes, this has been a crazy year, but not in regards to voters. Only in regards to play on the field. USC should spank Illinois, and OU should spank W. Va. However, that just won't matter. Not from a mathematical point of view or from a subjective, voter's point of view.

USC(#6 AP) beats Illinois(#12 AP) or OU(#3 AP) beats W.Va.(#11) but they cannot and will not jump LSU(#2 AP) if they beat OSU(#1 AP).

It cannot happen.

Highly unlikely it would happen with a close win by LSU but the way this season has gone anything is possible. I agree with TheDude in the AP Poll continues to lose it's relevance each year.

If Hawaii pulls off the upset against #4 AP ranked Georgia(#5 bcs also), then AP Champion may fall into the hands of then unbeaten Hawaii?!

That may be the split to consider according to www.si.com (12/4/07 frontpage-college football)

With the title game over a month away, I thought I'd start a little thought experiment. Suppose the following scenarios play out after Jan. 7:

1. LSU wins a close one over OSU (say 7 points or less)
2. OU takes WVU to the woodshed (17 points or more)
3. USC destroys Illinois (20 points or more)

IMO, the first is 50-50, the 2nd not very likely, and the 3rd pretty likely. Does the AP give the #1 ranking to either OU or USC? OU had a much stronger claim to the NC slot than USC due to the Stanford loss, so I could definitely see a split NC situation.

Now that I've stirred the hornet's nest, discuss. :lol:

A "split" national title WILL NOT...I repeat, WILL NOT happen this season!!!!

Why????? Because unlike '03, the coaches poll AND AP poll had the exact thing: Ohio St. #1...LSU #2.

Both sides are in complete agreement as to which teams are most deserving to play for the national title.

Split?? na... Will people hate on us for being the first 2 loss team ever to be in the big dance?? Oh yeah.. You'd better believe it.

Yet another record set for LSU this year.

But this year was also NOTHING like any other year in that there was no other choices:

WVU and Mizzou were the only other 1-loss teams--and they blew it the weekend of the selection.

Kansas has but 1 loss, but in 12 games, they played just ONE ranked opponent and lost to them (Mizzou)...Their SOS doesn't warrant it and besides, they didn't win their division, much less even play in their conference title game.

UGA: 2 losses and *see Kansas* and for all the other stuff about them that we've already discussed.

Oklahoma has 2 loses--but their loses were to unranked Colorado and Texas Tech.

Hawaii is undefeated, but PLEASE! Their SOS is possibly worse than Kansas'.

Yes, we're the first "two-loss" team to play for the National title, but there were NO OTHER 1 loss teams worthy--not even by a long shot!

I agree wholeheartedly... it'll be many years before the things transpire that need to for it to happen again. They'll hate us nonetheless... I'll just smile at em and say "Have a great day."..

Since the advent of the BCS there can be no split national championship. The winner of the National Championship game is the National Champion. Period. That's who the crystal football goes to and that is where the MacArthur Trophy goes as well.

If the AP . . . or People Magazine . . . or the newspaper in Opelika, Alabama issues a poll with someone else at number one then it is just a number-one poll position, not a National Championship.
