Well, in terms of speed, the only thing we have to measure Korte to safeties is by their 40 time (even though a straight 40 is only half of the equation when you consider that there is "speed" and then there's "playing speed" in which even a slower player could appear faster based on angles, etc.--but that's another discussion).

I pulled the 40 yard times for Korte from his Rivals.com profile.

Now, compare that to Shomari Clemons who was listed as a true safety and then I listed Danny McCray, who played safety this season.

    Korte 4.6-forty
    Clemons 4.66-forty
    McCray 4.59-forty

I think he's fast enough. I just hope he has the lateral movement and ability to change direction like a safety.

Great post. Taking correct angles is crucial. I've seen Josh Bullocks take some of the worst angles ever with the Saints. I don't care if you're 4.4, if you take the wrong first couple of steps, you're often toast.

This just came in, it appears that Crowton discovered a new talent at LSU. Crowton said that he dicovered a talent in the super-fast 5'5" Trindon Holliday, he said that Holliday can throw the ball for 70 yards and with amazing accuracy, similar to that of QB Jamarcus Russell, where he was able to pin point his recievers on the RUN!! He said that Holliday will be seriously competing for the open slot at QB with QBs Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux.

Very well said, thats more what I was getting at. I know he has comparable straight line speed to the avg safety. To be an ideal safety in the LSU scheme you need quickness. Also, like you said, lateral speed, start and stop, hip flexibility, read and recognitions, etc add into the equation. He is a former FB/RB, so he may have the agility.

WOW, he's kind of slow!! I mean Laron Landry had 4.45-40!! LL was one of the main reasons we didnt give up a lot of big plays this season, he always seemed to catch up with the RBs when they breakout, and match up with the speed of the recievers he was covering. But that is LL, the best safety in College football!!

You're right. He is the best. But we're not talking about players ready to take that spot as "the best safety" next year...we're talking about guys that give us depth at the safety spot.

By no means was I implying that McCray, Clemons or Korte is going to assume the role and have the same success that LaRon had. But the bottom line is that, across the country, on MANY big-time programs, you have safties that run 4.6-forties.

Off subject a bit, but wow, times really have changed. I remember in the early '90's when running a 4.5-forty was considered "smoking"! ...now it's viewed as "blah"--he's slow.

I ran summer track growing up and in the state meet sponsored by Hershey's, I finished 7th in the state in the 400m (and I ran the 40 in a dismal 4.7 with a wind-aided 4.6 ONCE in-awhile..and that was in '90).
