A new guy at work told me he went to UL. I replied that I never cared for Monroe. The look on his face was classic. Coincidentally I was out of the office and I emailed that guy to fax me over a ream of paper because the field team had run out. He replied asking me for a fax number.
I grew up in Lafayette and found that the town had a huge LSU following but also (obviously) a big Cajuns fanbase. Over the years, I think the anti-LSU sentiment has grown by Cajuns fans. They hate that LSU fans won't recognize UL as their name. I prefer to call them ULL as it upsets them just as much as USL (and it's their actual name). I kind of agree that the USL thing on the site is a bit "below the belt" although it doesn't bother me that much. I went to USL games when I was a kid (Brian Mitchell days) and really tried to make them my second favorite team. They were for awhile but it was always confusing when Cajuns fans would take delight in LSU's misfortunes. Finally, last year I decided to generally root against the Cajuns in most cases. There were two incidents that caused this to happen. The first was watching the Florida/LSU game last year at a friend's house in Lafayette. Half were LSU fans and the other half were Cajuns. The Cajuns fans were ruthless in their mocking of LSU and that game hurt to the core. The other was during the Troy game when a couple of my ULL fans sent texts rubbing it in.:LSU231:
My mom went to USL when it was USL. She didn't know they changed the name. I still think that making fun of a rival's name is all part of it. Who's getting pissy when someone says Gaytors? Gaytor fans. Its only below the belt cause its funny, but funnier because people are getting their undaroos all bunched up (which only makes me wanna call em USL more).
Just like a lot of ULM grads/fans still call it NLU. I don't see the insult at all any more than I see an insult in using the word "coonass".
tUSL= theUNIVERSITYofSOUTHERNLOSERS... or their modern era name... theUNIVERSTYofLOUISIANALOSERS. LOL, how do they have the room to laugh at LSU? LMMFAO... have they ever won more than 4 games a year?
