Picture evidence from practice that Jordan Jefferson has been working hard

I was browsing the LSUsports.net photo galleries and came across this picture of Jordan Jefferson warming up. The boy looks jacked (pause). The technique is pretty poor, but don't let that get in the way of this positive thread.

With all this talk of the "mechanics" of Jefferson's and Rivers' throwing motions, I'm wondering if sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone.

A lot of this is probably genetic. For example, both Stephen and Phillip Rivers have the same 3/4 release. Maybe they have some muscle ligament that's shorter than average and this causes the throwing motion to be what it is. Would coaching actually make an improvement in performance? Or would changing the motion make things awkward, unnatural, and interfere with performance.

Okie's been surmising on another thread that maybe the LSU pitching coaching has something to do with all the Tommy John surgeries we've had.

It can be a delicate thing sometimes, I think.

MLB hall of famer Mel Ott had an extremely unusual batting stance...he ended up standing on his back leg with his front leg off the ground while waiting on the pitch. He went from high school ball (in New Orleans) straight to the major leagues because (then New York ) giants manager John McGraw didn't want minor league coaching to interfere with his swing.

I wonder if, sometimes, corrections aren't the best.

By the way, I had the fortune of being a classmate with Mel Ott's granddaughter in graduate school and we played on the same intramural volleyball team. Despite never seeing her grandfather's famous swing, she served the volleyball with the same one footed hitch...I'm totally convinced that it was genetic. :)

I personally have never minded his release being how it is- I felt his performance was pretty damn good last season all things considered- but his hands are way too far apart in this picture, meaning his front shoulder is flying open too early. His left hand should be even with his eyes and tighter to his body. It looks like he's trying to muscle up and launch a deep pass on this one, and that is usually when guys lose their mechanics the most.

I'm not trying to judge his release on one picture though, I just wanted to show how much more size he's gotten in the off season. That should help reduce the number of sacks and increase our short yardage percentage at the very least.

Another credit to Moffitt and his staff.

Context. That looks like he's getting ready to throw one as far as he can. If it turns out it's a screen pass, I'd be worried.

On the other hand, I bet that most of the time (almost always) good coaching really helps greatly.

When I was playing tennis back in college (in the days of Jimmy Connors and the Wilson T-2000) I read where Billie Jean King wanted to improve her serve so she could dominate the womens game. She hired a coach who made a few changes in her mechanics and she really bought into it. After tons of practice, she lost in the first round of the next tournament by double faulting almost every single time she had service. And this happened for several months where her serve stunk...she dropped in the rankings, but stuck with it. Eventually she developed into one of the greatest of all time because her serve was on a different level.

I bet people lose their mechanics because they give up during the first phase of learning where everything seems to go backwards.

I don't really know. I never played football....maybe that's why I love watching the game so much...Maybe that's why I get so infuriated with people like Ryan Perriloux who and TK Fleming who just pi$$ away all their opportunity and talent.

If there is one thing and one thing only that GC & Staff were able to fix with JJ this off season, Its the option/roll out/Dual Threat Ability - NOT HIS ARM. He is not a pocket QB. Get him out of the pocket on the roll(Denver Bronco Style), he gives our slot receivers (RS, RR) more time to get open over the middle, Our TE, and RB more time to come off thier blocks for short yard gains and we move the football!

After a atleast 2 first downs into a drive, if you want to take a shot down field, knock yourself out, but NO MORE 3 & OUTS!!! TT will be great inside the 20 on a corner route to the endzone with his height!

AND...If we can get the option going, We will be a real threat!, JJ is stronger, bigger, and has more confidence to keep the football, lower his shoulder and put somebody on his A$$, also if he has more confidence in his mobility, knowing he checked off as many receivers as he could, he can take it himself and pick up 5 or 6, OR MORE with his legs!
