I think Phil Jackson is one of the greatest basketball coaches. Auerbach had a few good players, like Bill Russell. What nobody has mentioned, is that when Jackson had Jordan and Pipen he also had DENNIS RODMAN, the almost uncoachable one. Does anyone remember the Bulls playing a game on Monday night, Rodman catches a red-eye to Vegas after the game, gambles (and whatever) all day Tuesday and Tue. night, flies back to Chicago Wed. about lunchtime for the game that night. Rodman could tear a team apart, like Terrel Owens can. But, Jackson make it work. Story I read said when Jackson had the opportunity to get Rodman (best rebounder in the league, disruptive factor to the other team), he called in Pipen and Jordan and asked if they wanted him. He said before you answer, I will say that Rodman must be managed different than everyone on the team. He will be allowed to break team rules, and ONLY Rodman can do it. This is what I will have to do to motivate Rodman. If you do the same thing, I'll fine you. Do you want Rodman? Both thought about it for a while, then said yes. When Rodman went to Vegas, there was no fine. Jackson knows each player, knows what it takes to motivate them, and I think he handles each differently. In LA, Jackson had Kobe and Shaq, and they hated each other. Try winning a championship, or 3, when your two best players hate each other. Phil Jackson never had perfect situations. He had some very disruptive factors on the team and he won anyhow. Look at Auerbach and the Celtics, no disruptive factors, no big feuds. The point that those teams didn't win with the previous coaches, and became champions when Jackson arrived speaks volumes. Were Jordan and Kobe younger with those other coaches, yes. But when Jackson was winning his championships, there were some other good teams out there. I say Jackson is one of the best ever. An underrated head coach is Greg Popovich at San Antonio. Because they play in a small market, nobody focuses on him, but look at the job he's done, winning with different players. I think he's better than Adelman or Sloan, but you never hear his name mentioned among the elite coaches.
No big feuds for the Celtics back in the day, because that was an era in sports where feuds were not made public. And Rodman was never a team chemistry guy. His teammates always liked him. He just is crazy. A lot easier to coach crazy players than selfish players and Rodman wasn't selfish.
How about this for some Kobe Motivation? Jerry West praises Lebron over Kobe: LeBron James surpassing Kobe Bryant as NBA's best player, Jerry West says - ESPN
Here We Go..... Lets etch this in stone now......lol I still dont see it. You cant even defend Lebron because of refs, hell you cant even play defense in the NBA anymore because they wanted scoring to be the main factor. Lebron is 6'8 271lbs, you telling me your supposed to defend him without contact? I cant wait till Kobe embarasses Lebron in the finals...lol.
lebron and kobe each have something to prove. kobe won when he was the second best player on his team to shaq who averaged about 38 and 15. lebron has to prove he has that mass murderer's mentality (awkward alliteration alert x2) to finish off a more talented team in the finals. when lebron proves he is the best in the finals ill be glad to anoint him and ask kobe how that ass tastes.
It looks like all the Kobe vs Lebron talk was a bit premature. The Cavs are in a huge hole, down 3-1. Lebron seems to run out of gas late in the 4th Qtr. The Lakers are very inconsistent, and Kobe needs Lamar Odom to step up. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
Lebron had 9 turnovers last night 5 in the 4th quarter and overtime. Enough said. Also, they have no one, to defend Dwight Howard.
