I just saw a tweet from Colts owner Jim Irsay :

I'm thinking that Manning's neck is effed up really bad and Irsay plans to "suck for Luck". Manning retires. Goodbye Peyton Manning. Hello Andrew Luck.

Am I reading too much into it?

I think that is almost exactly what will happen. Colts will go 0-16, draft luck and let him learn from Manning for a few years.

At least that is what I would do.

Maybe they will convert Peyton's recent contract into a head coach agreement.

Would LOVE it if Luck refused to play for them, ALA Elway (To the B. Colts) or E. Manning (to the Chargers).

I HATED when both those guys pulled that crap, but it would be PERFECT here IMO, especially if the Dolts pull a 2011 season tank job.

Peyton strikes me as so football obsessed and comptetive that I don't think he'd retire this off-season. He's probably going to want to play, at least, for a couple more seasons.

And, if you're the Colts and you got Andrew Luck all ready to go, would you want to keep paying Manning all that money? If we were talking about anybody else, but Luck is considered a slam duck, the best QB prospect since John Elway. (When Manning came into the NFL, NFL teams were evenly divided between Manning and Leaf).

Look at what the Raiders paid for Carson Palmer, who hasn't been any good for years. Look at what teams like Arizona traded away to get Kevin Kolb when nobody had any idea yet if Kolb was any good. If you're that NFL team that's only just a QB from winning it all like Baltimore or SF, how much would you give up to get Manning.

If I were Colts, I'd trade Manning for a boatload of draft picks that could grow together with Luck. You could do that too if you traded away Luck for draftpicks and kept Manning, but Luck has a whole career ahead of him while we can see the endline for Manning's career. And, by keeping Manning, all those draft picks would be peaking just when Manning's career would be fading.

Why would he even consider doing this? So he can go to Seatlle instead? The colts seem to have the drafting thing down and are probably not far away from being back to form. Get to learn from PM along the way? I know you were saying "what if" but that won't happen.

why would Luck want to be Peyton Manning's immediate replacement? I would want to go to Miami, or Denver, John Elway and Dan Marino were years ago, Manning is fresh on everyone's mind.

    this would be ideal.

but i dont see peyton retiring any time soon. as long as the neck holds up which Im guessing it will. of course that is one big head to support so maybe it will give way.

worst case if they get luck, peyton stays til 2016 and they are forced to trade him in 2013.

    to the saints maybe.
