Frankly, blacks have little to complain about. It's obvious that Hispanics and Asians have been getting the shaft from Hollywood. Sure there's the token Bruce Lee and Ang Lee and decades ago the Messicans had Rita Moreno. So where are are their acting nominations this year? They can do more than drive low-riders and rice rockets.
So no Jesse, no Al, no Spike, no Michael Moore.....could be the first time I actually might like to attend.
Saw something where someone did a breakdown and african american's as a percentage got more nominations and wins in those catergories than percentage of african american actors.
It's really simple, wanna be nominated, be in a good movie, or do a great job acting. 12 years a slave garnered all sorts of accolades, and I didn't think it was that good a movie. I think it was nominated and won awards only because it was about slavery. The book was captivating, and Sue Eakin was a teacher at LSUA and to hear her talk about it was riveting, but the movie....meh...
The Oscars have done this for years. The statue often goes to an undeserving person and then years later the person who should have won gets a "make up" win. Either that or a long-suffering loser finally gets a lifetime achievement nod....like Spike Lee is getting this year. He's doing what you suggested LaSalle....he's getting an award but he ain't showing up to get it. He looks like a asshat. I honestly don't know what he's done to earn a lifetime achievement award when he's only been nominated 2x for an Oscar. He's receiving one with Debbie Reynolds and Gena Rowlands, two FAR more established actors and Hollywood legends. Frankly, Halle Berry who has actually won an Oscar, has a far better resume and is one of the most highly paid actresses in Hollywood, deserved that award more than Spike. I'd like to see him explain why he deserves the award over, say, Sly Stallone. So let's talk Hollywood sexism, it's a far bigger problem.
Not really. Sports and Hollywood have a lot in common. Insider politics, money, and basically a beauty contest. One winner despite it being a group effort, lots of $$ involved for the winner. The Heisman voters are the same as the Academy voters.
And while Spike wants to lament the dirge of black executives in the board room, this is the current AMPAS President. There is subtext to Spike's commentary and it is directed at the overwhelming majority of Jewish people who run Hollywood.
Ha, I had something in the last post I made but erased it. You know someone is gonna say that you can't say the Academy isn't racist just because the President is black, that's like saying America isn't racist because the President is black. Well, 2 different things. The President of the Academy is probably way more representative of her colleagues and Constituents than the President of the United States is. It's 2 different scenarios, 2 different things. Leonard Fournette could go to New York and politely say I can't accept this award because I feel it doesn't represent what the award should be about. Spike Lee just saying fuck it I'm not going, is something completely different.
