IMO, neither will work. You aren't going to stop people from coming to America to earn a better life for themselves. They'll just find other creative ways around the system. Building a ten foot wall just means they'll need an 11 foot ladder. This will not change until people no longer need a reason to come to America.

Besides, keeping people who want to better their lives out of America is so... un-American...

Cute saying, but the new triple-fence sections have proven to be extremely effective, especially when actively patrolled. The 20-foot wall at San DIego changed the rules completely in California. It's not porous anymore.

Thus BOTH. We need to start putting US employers who hire illegals in jail. That will pour cold water on the motive to come over.

Hey, we allow huge numbers of them to come over legally. I welcome legal immigrants. It allows us to screen them for communicable diseases, terrorists, felons, and other undesirables who do not come to join us. It allows us to bring in the number of immigrants that we have legitimate jobs for. We need cheap internationally competitive labor in the agricultural sector. We need affordable help in many of the low-paid service sectors. But we don't need them to displace Americans from good-paying blue-collar jobs in construction and industry. We need to draw that line clearly. We have too many people out of work to permit this.

If immigrants go through the proper procedures, take a job and work it for five years, stay out of trouble, and assimilate into the society, then they can apply for citizenship and start moving on up the economic ladder like everyone else.

We have lots of medical, engineering, scientific, and high-tech jobs that there are too few qualified americans to fill. Immigrants with those kinds of skills help us and should be accommodated.
