Notebook: USC’s upset shows strength of Pac-10

USC players were speechless after losing to 25-point underdog Oregon State for the second time in three years at Reser Stadium.
“It’s real bitter,” defensive end Kyle Moore said Thursday night. “We lost by not focusing.”
Losses are usually accompanied by excuses, and the one used after this setback was the strength of the Pac-10 Conference, the same conference that recently went 0-4 against the Mountain West.
“This is a reality of how tough this conference is,” offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said. “We have to prepare really well every week.”
USC coach Pete Carroll also defended the Pac-10.
“The ability of the Pac-10 is obvious,” Carroll said. “People don’t think they can play like this. Oregon State’s going to do really well and win a lot of games this season. The Pac-10 is ridiculously hard.”

This is such crap, Pac-10 has been run through so far this season like a 10$ w hore.

Dude, when SC loses to a team they overlooked on the road, there really is no other way to spin it. No coach is going to come out and say well we got schooled by a cupcake. It just is what it is. What adds substance to those statements are the remainder of SC's schedule. As long as they believe that, then it is OK.

There shouldnt be any spin here at all, you dont got from going 0-4 last weekend to a tough conference this week, just because the number 1 team in the country and conference loses to a conference foe. OSU got drummed last week at Penn St, then turns around to beat the 1# team.

The Pac-1/2 is good..........at volleyball, water polo, underwater basket-weaving...BUT definitely not football.

    Arizona
    Arizona State
    Cal
    Oregon
    Oregon State
    Stanford
    UCLA
    USC
    Washington
    Washington State

I'm looking at these 10 teams and I don't see much that strikes fear in any opponent. Other than USC, I don't see anybody that is has an all-time Top 25 program. Other than a media push for USC, I don't see any team that can challenge for a BCS title.

So my question is...what am I missing? The hype that is the Pac-10 has everything to do with viewers and merchandise/media sales. $$$ drives the push for the Pac-10. It's definitely not earned on the field.

My take on this is, it's one thing for they're offense to come out flat, be unprepared, etc. But the telling stat of this game was the nearly 200 rushing yards USC gave up right into the teeth of their 'vaunted' and the best LB since David Pollack, Rey Maualuga. Flat or not, good defenses just don't allow that to keep happening; especially after half time when adjustments can be made.

USC's "excuse" for the loss "was the strength of the Pac-10 Conference, the same conference that recently went 0-4 against the Mountain West."

Sad thing is listening to some talk today, there are actually some national types who are trying to buy into that. COME ON! This same Oregon State team got blasted by Penn State, and lost to Stanford... yes THAT Stanford... this season already. They are now 2-2... they didn't just become a juggernaut last night, they'll lose several more games this year as well.

Pac 10 didn't get any tougher since they went 0-5 to the Mountain West earlier this season, so let's cut the denial.

I want to see Oregon State go 4-8.

That will be criticial as time goes on to lay some legitimacy to the awful loss that this truly was.
