Funny. Exactly the opposite. Everyone I know from the South calls it a buggie. I have never heard anyone from the West call it that. It's a cart.
My grandparents on my dad's side came from Scotland to America through Philly and settled in Santa Barbara. My grandfather's accent was so thick, we rarely understood a word he said. We'd wait until he looked at us like he was expecting an answer...and then we'd just say, "yes, oh...okay". Lol. He told us some war stories, too bad I have no clue what they were.
My grandparents and a lot of their friends spoke French. I hated that I couldn't understand what they were saying. I didn't really think they were talking about me but I could never be sure.
If you're referring to the spelling, I would agree. However, if not, then... "A buggy is a carriage or small wagon pulled by a horse. It can also be another term for the cart one uses to shop. This term is mainly spoken and understood in the Southern United States. Be aware, however, that this can also be a term for a child’s stroller or pushchair and can be extremely confusing to some audiences." https://grammarist.com/usage/shopping-cart-or-buggy/ "I remember the first time I went shopping here in the South. It’s not all that different than shopping in the North. You see the same food’s for the most part and many of the same national brands. Despite the more pleasant attitudes of Southerners it seems that shopping brings out the worst in everyone no matter their geographic location. Then it happened. I asked someone for their shopping cart they were putting back and I got a look of confusion and astonishment. They looked at me and said, “You mean my buggy?” I was like, “Umm, yeah that.” They gave it to me and went on their way and I went a shopping wondering what on earth just happened. Never in my life have I heard it called a buggy. " https://southernyankeecooking.wordpress.com/2012/07/12/the-buggy-vs-the-cart/ "favorite words only Southerners say....Buggy: it’s not a shopping cart, but a buggy" http://prettysouthern.com/2011/06/29/words-only-southerners-say/ Some of the links I found did bring up a few other differences I've heard. "Pop" instead of soda. Never heard anyone use the word "pop" in CA. Or coonass, lol.
One of my good friends in college would laugh nis ass off at me for saying that. We say, “Save the dishes.” What y’all say when y’all return them to the cabinet? We also say, “Pass it in the microwave” when we want to nuke something.
