I notice a question about Mike, the LSU mascot, posted by an OSU fan. (mods, forgive me if this has already been posted and the question answered) From TAF and LSU Sports.net – some info from a brief history – Mike I – purchased from the Little Rock, AR Zoo on October 10, 1936. Named Mike after LSU athletic trainer Mike Chambers who got the ball rolling for a live mascot. It was financed by a 25¢ per student donation. Mike I died in 1956 and the Louisiana Legislature passed a resolution and the school again purchases a live Tiger mascot – Mike II and LSU has had a live Tiger mascot living on campus since that time. Mike V, a 370 lb Bengal Tiger passed away on May 18, 2007. Mike VI arrived on campus at his multimillion dollar habitat on August 25, 2007. He already weighs 400 lbs and may get much bigger because of the mix of Tiger breeds he represents. Mike the Tiger has his own Vet – Dr. David Baker of the LSU VetSchool. **************************** On a personal note, my mother always despised the live mascot (Mike I) because every morning when I walked with her to get our mail at the old LSU Post Office near the Indian Mounds and the stadium, I would give her the devil if she didn’t let me go see Mike the Tiger – rain, shine, hot, cold – it did not matter. ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule: ldskule:
Mike the Tigers habitat is nicer than my house. I applaud LSU for finally doing something about the old cage a few years back; which was creul for an animal like a tiger. Check it out, www.mikethetiger.com
