First time poster...Why do we continue to run the option to the short side of the field? By the time the HB gets the ball he's almost out of bounds. Why do we continue to run the fake FB dive HB pitch play? It just seems that both of these plays rarely work, but we run them often.:nope:
It's called the "Strong" side because that's where the blockers are. If the QB times it right and the blockers block, it can work. Running wide to the weak side in the SEC normally means a fast linebacker or safety is going to string it out for a 2 yard loss. Because the coaches work all week on blocking and opening holes and hope that eventually it's going to work. You can't totally abandon it. I'd give the rest of the team the week off and work only on the O-Line this week. (halfway kidding)
Yeah, that was part of the missed field goal drive. I was pretty heated when they did that, I thought it was a bad call at the time. But maybe the coaches saw something we didn't, and the D just handled it. Sometimes calls either look brilliant, or look stupid, just hard to judge. Every time RS ran the option it turned out pretty well. I can't wait to see him in the end zone. I hope that the coaches start using him in the red zone, I think he scores early and often once they start doing that.
Running to the short or strong side of the field is ok, but usually leaves the option out of it, so the D can focus up on the QB as the sideline takes care of the pitch man. Just makes the option easier to defend when you run it to the short side of the field.
No team can just run to the wide side all of the time. Nor can they just run to the strong side. Strong teams have to mix it up--strong and weakside runs, short and wide-side runs. Sometimes you have to run a play that doesn't play to your strengths because it keeps the opponent from keying on your favorite plays.
Les is hell bent on getting the running game going which I agree with and he is just trying to find some place we can run. So far he hasn't been able to find anywhere to run on a somewhat consistent basis.
regardless of the play direction, has anyone noticed that JJ almost always F%$*'s the back on the option pitch? I think I saw one good pitch yesterday - all the others (like most this season) were perfectly timed for the defense to waylay the back - and usually for no gain or a loss.
Yep:thumb: Because he's young, inexperienced and still learning on the fly. You shouldn't expect the execution of a 5th year senior here. Imagine if he had been thrown in there for game 4 last season. He might have been permanently scarred. You've gotta give the coaches SOME credit for doing what they need (not want) to do.
Did he run the option in High School? That could have an affect as well. Its something that you grow into, and its not natural for all QBs. There is a reason they are the coaches and we are the fans. I would put this one under one of those categories.
fair enough - we can chalk it up to an "opportunity". With his feet and our backs, the option could be a tremendous weapon for us, particularly given our "up the middle" challenges with a young OL.
