i can't help but think of all of these quarterbacks who are labeled as having great "potential" with additional seasoning. too often you hear of a quarterbacks athletic or scrambling ability or their rocket arm...but they fail because of their decision making (lack of) ability. i'm not looking for the greatest athlete, just someone who shows potential and is a student of the game. eventhough i sometimes like jj a fair amount the look on his face is like a deer in the headlights. is it his makeup or is clm, crowton and crew just pathetic teachers?

and why don't i see us going after the top hs quarterbacks year-in, year-out? it seems lsu would've been an attractive place after perriloux was thrown off the team, coming off a national championship. and why not more offensive lineman and linebackers. we're always in the mix for multiple wide receivers or running backs, but that's not where it should end.

Regardless of size, one has to be able to pass accurately. Shep was not a good passer in high school. He would have signed with Texas, but Mack Brown told him he would not play QB at Texas.

That would have been the case had Lee not gotten hurt at the end of last year...

Seems the whole lot of them has just not panned out. I don't know if its just bad luck, poor coaching, or what but seems we just can't catch a break with the quarterback position the past years.

Could it be they are just going after the wrong type of person. I mean we have pretty much always had guys who may not have been the most skilled, etc but seems we almost always at least had someone who could think and manage the game. Now it seems like we have an assortment of highly ranked QB coming out of HS that have just fizzed in the college setting.

Have nothing against any of them but I don't see any of them being the answer and I think next year is going to be more of the same. I hope I am wrong but it just seems like this is what we are going to be looking at in year 3 for a couple of these guys.

Excellent point. Matt Mauck, Matt Flynn... Maybe we need to find another QB named Matt, and we'll be all set!

I agree with you here - it's only my opinion, but what I'm seeing in our QB's since Matt Flynn is this: These guys have INSANE physical skills that make them superman in high school, but when they reach the SEC, the mental aspect of the game must reach the same level as the physical - and these guys just don't have "it". By "it", I mean the mental toughness, agility and speed to match their physical skills.

By the time a player comes to big time college football, it takes a complete package of brains and physicality to be successful. And as good as they truly are, we're just not seeing the complete package from the candidates recently tested on the field.

Recruiters can see the physical side of a player's talents, but must project their ability to process information QUICKLY on the collegiate playing field. Some of them just don't develop. Others need a few years and thousands of reps to, as we say, "slow down the game". Obviously, the game doesn't get any slower; their ability to process the information and make good decisions gets faster.

    Time will tell. :geaux:

Holy crap, PD. You and I posted almost the identical post in differnt threads. The world may be coming to an end. LOL. It is the "It" factor. We need somebody not necessarily with the off the chart skills but a cerebral guy who is a pretty good athlete that can win when he has too ala Flynn, Mauck, Hodson, etc.

Senior. The word you're looking for is 'Senior'. The problem is that they have to be freshmen, sophomores and juniors first. That can't be solved any other way than taking your lumps and time.

You mean all of the confidence he built up yesterday pulling pine splinters out of his rear? We REALLY do need a new OC and QB coach. We REALLY do.
