I have a brother in law who played for USL. He's from Baton Rouge and hate LSU to this date b/c he wasn't recruited by them. He was a five year non-starter at USL so that ought to tell you something.

Oh yeah, Mr. Lockett, you're going to eat those words come Saturday night.

My dad hated LSU for pretty much most of the 70's and 80's. Now, keep this in mind: he was a high school football coach, and while he didn't necessarily steer guys away from signing with LSU, he always encouraged guys to explore all of their options.

He had one particular blue-chipper in the early 80's who was recruited from many major schools. LSU assumed that he was a lock to them. I received a call one day when my dad wasn't home, so I was taking the message. It was Coach Donahue from UCLA.

I was only 10, but he must've assumed I was older because he started asking me questions about the recruit when I told him my dad wasn't home.

    It went something like this:

Coach Donahue, "So, I guess he's definitely going to LSU?"

Me, "Oh, no, not at all. LSU assumes he's going there because he only lives about a mile from campus, but actually, he wants to leave the state. He's told my dad this."

Coach Donahue, "Well, thank you very much..."

The recruit in question signed with UCLA and played for 4 full years, making All-American @ DB his last two years.

I'd rather take a beating week in and week out as a walk-on wearing purple and gold than be a 4-year starter in vermillion and cream.

The only local stud from that time period that I can recall going to UCLA would have been Catholic High's own Neal Dellocono.

How close am I, Stacy?
