Re: Tressel and Top 5 That is funny...I will give you KUDOS on that .... but really I know all about those booster violations and they were very similar to the incident when Troy Smith got suspended in 2005. A head coach cannot control what an affluent booster does, but is always responsible for the action.
You said "It has always been my opinon that Mr. Miles (all UM ties aside) is a very average coach who never did much at Okla St, plays with Saban's talent, and will be exposed eventually...basically in over his head at LSU ...[/quote]These are not facts, chief. This is your opinion and it is both insulting to LSU fans and it is inflammatory on an LSU board. My how impressive! I'm a former Nobel Laureate, Medal of Honor winner, and one of the Beatles, myself, . . . and Chuck Norris fears my name. You still aren't going to get away with backhanded insults to our coach or our team. Take it as a friendly warning and stick to football analysis.
You beat me to it. Little known fact...Miles was the first coach at OSU since Jimmy Johnson to post a winning record there. So what now, beeches? Oh, we will get exposed 'eventually,' will we? Well, how long is eventually? Last year was supposed to be 'the first true test of Miles coaching ability.' Ok, no problem...11 wins, BCS bowl victory. Oh, but then this year was going to be the 'real test.' Cool...how about 11 wins, SEC title, and an NC appearance? Seems to me, the more time that passes, the more successful Miles becomes. So at this rate, we eventually will get exposed...we will get exposed as a dynasty.
He hasn't been deleted or banned, just warned. We don't squash people for having pride in their own team or for engaging in friendly banter, so don't invoke "TideFans" on us. But flaming and trolling will not be tolerated.
Two points; I would say when Les Miles takes his own recruits after 2/3 years wins repeat championships and you see a constant upgrade of talent and how the talent is coached up...all credit goes to Coach Miles. see Pete Carroll when he got to USC...a good non bias example. In the case of Tressel his "violations" at YSU were due to an idiot booster. As I said earlier a college football coach has no control over a rich booster who wants to do things to get close to players or win their favor, BUT always gets to be accountable for whatever happens and that is exactly what happened.
Be fair. You know how many top flight pros Ohio State has put out. A jab, but an inaccurate one. A previous LSU poster made a terrific point. It doesn't matter that Les Miles has coached some of Saban's recruits, it's that he developed them into the fine talented players that they are. This proves to me that the man can a) evaluate talent and b) coach 'em up to be the best they can be. He's similar to Jim Tressel in this regard. Tressel has done more with 3 star recruits (A.J. Hark, 'Lil Animal, Malcolm Jenkins) than many at other top programs have done with 4 and 5 stars. It's one reason the Ohio State fans are so fiercely defensive of him. He really gets the most from his players. Well, except for 1/8/07 but that one will fade eventually. I did not know about the NCAA sanctions at YSU. Honestly, it surprises me because Tressel exudes character. Not knowing the particulars I'm not going to speculate. What I can say is that since he's been at Ohio State he's done nothing but make good decisions regarding his players and the program. Criminy, what other coach suspends a player for basically 7 games for a misdemeanor offense? None that I've seen. It's tough love if a player gets in trouble at OSU and I respect that stance. Anyway, I've digressed. The point is that any reasonable fan will realize that both programs have coaches that are keepers. Ya'll know that we're always going to razz Les because he's an Ohioan that became a M*ch*g*n Man. Those guys are always considered to be traitors just as you'd consider a top LSU kid that goes to Auburn or Alabama or Ole Miss or any other SEC school you love to hate a traitor.
Re: Tressel and Top 5 I don't have any problem with Tressel being rated as one of the better coaches in college, just your statement about him being the best coach, hands down, is a bunch of bunk. He got lucky with the zebras in one championship game, and he got absolutely killed in the other. Now before you start talking about the Buckeyes being flat last year, let's examine that. You had 2 people on that team that were serious Heisman candidates, and the Buckeyes playing in the biggest game of their lives, and you want to blame their performance on being flat and unprepared? Well whose fault is that? Here's the stats from last year, in case it's slipped your mind. FL OS 1st Downs 21 8 Total Yards 370 82 Passing 214 35 Rushing 156 47 Penalties 6-50 5-50 3rd Down Conversions 10-19 1-9 4th Down Conversions 2-3 0-1 Turnovers 0 2 Possession 40:48 19:12
