The Saints/Packers game and a few others in the NFL this year had me thinking about how rare it is for a flag to be thrown for stuff going on in the bottom of a pile while fighting for the ball after a fumble. Refs are always trying to get players off the pile, looking into the bottom to see who has possession, and I'm guessing see/hear things that the camera doesn't always pick up. Is it basically "anthing goes" with the refs being told not to throw personal foul flags? Any games that come to mind when a ref threw a personal foul flag in the aftermath of a pile with players fighting for the ball? Compared to some of the more minor incidents (player slightly pushing another player shortly after whistle and getting a flag), I have to think there are much more violent acts going on in the pile. Shouldn't this be a safety issue for Goodell?
