I didn't get to see the 2nd half of our game. I'm going to try and watch some of the Germany-Australia game this afternoon.

Also, is a red card automatic disqualification?

yes, red card puts you out for the game you are in and the next one.

as is typical the discussion about a particular game turns into a "soccer sucks" vs "no it doesn't" thread. Anyway, the US is lucky to have gotten out of there with a tie. It's a good result and we could still win the group. The best part is that our second round match up is with one of the weaker groups. Germany will struggle with out Ballack and Australia is not that great. Those two are most likely to advance. While I knew our defense sucked going into this game, I thought we would be able to get more pressure. I think Buddle needs to start next game with Gomze coming in at about 70 minutes. The formula has worked so why mess with it.

To those who know soccer, could someone explain to me why it appeared the US wasn't really trying to put together any offensive attacks? It appeared most of the game, when the English goalkeeper made a stop, he'd send the ball to one of the defensemen to send it up field for an offensive attack. Whenever Howard made a stop, it seemed he always just kicked it passed midfield, where, inevitably, England would take the ball back and start attacking.

I'll readily admit to being a newbie to the game, but this to me feels to be equivalent in basketball to taking the ball out of bounds, and instead of passing it to your point guard, just heaving it up to the front court hoping for something good to happen. Can anyone help me?

Lucky is an understatement. I saw the goal on ESPN and found it hard to believe that a World Cup caliber goalie couldn't stop it.

Kind of like the free safety getting beat by 40 yards on a streak pattern.

Also, can someone explain in 24 words or less the offside rule.

you cant pass the ball to a player who is behind all of the defense except one (and the goalie).

    put another way:

you cannot receive a pass unless there were at least 2 defenders between you and the goal at the time the pass was kicked. the goalie counts as one of those defenders.

So in another words, you can't have a breakaway goal like you do in hockey?

    Thanks for the explanation.

Yes you can. A player can advance the ball past the defense. What can't happen is a player hanging out behind the defense waiting to receive a pass.

You can, but similar to hockey, it has to be done right. Hockey's offside is entirely dictated by the blue-line. You know that you have to have all of your players behind the blue line before you can pass the puck into the zone. In soccer, the offside line moves with the deepest defender. You can get it to a guy who's in a one-on-one with the last defender, and he can pull a way for a shot on goal. However, you can't have a guy sit behind the defense and wait for a long pass.
