I don't believe salaries are a major factor in the decision. If 100,000 fans from each school had to travel to the game, you could reasonably expect many to not have the means to spend a great deal of money. For these bowls games, we're talking 25,000 people who will have sufficient disposable income and won't have to eat at McDonald's. I'll be staying wherever the team stays. (Hopefully something like the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta last year.) I'll buy my souvenirs and eat out locally as well as buy a lot of drinks! It will be great joining Michigan fans in chanting "Screw USC, Screw Notre Dame". We can even teach them to say "Go to Hell Ole Miss, Go to Hell!". Just don't expect too much from the area or the Rose Bowl itself. Trust me...after living in Southern California you learn that everything is overrated. The parade is great and the matchup would be great but the "Granddaddy of them all" just simply means it's old. We don't realize how good we've got it with the Sugar Bowl...the scene of many more quality games.
Hey them Fightin Irish are rich! They have the ability to buy themselves a Rose Bowl....gosh darnit doohickee.
TV ratings are probably more important to these bowl execs than the number of travelling fans and how much they spend. That's where the real money is made. Ticket sell is a non-issue since it'll be a sellout no matter who is playing ... it's the Rose Bowl. I'm sure the local chamber of commerce wants fans to spend a lot of money in their city, but probably not a huge factor to the people making this decision. ND has the TV advantage over everyone. And for the record, I'd put LSU fans up against anyone when it comes to spending money on road trips. Now, some may not have the cash flow of others around the country, but that doesn't stop them from spending money. May have to postpone making mortgage payments a few months, but it's worth it!:thumb:
You could also make an argument that an LSU fan living in Dallas, ATL, BR, NOLA has more disposable income than a Notre Dame fan living in NYC, Chicago, LA, SF.........it's a flimsy argument though. I will say, as a fact, that Notre Dame has a far bigger built-in audience of fans who already live in California. If we make the Rose, I'll go to the game and try to scalp, or at least come and tailgate with everybody.
Yes and No......Yes, it may be true that ND has the TV advantage, but NO, maybe not this year as that matchup is not going to be as competitive and appealing, if the TV audience knows anything about college football this year.
Watching college football bowl games on New Year's Day is like Super Bowl Sunday. You get many viewers who don't have a clue about the teams and don't closely follow the sport throughout the season. Michigan vs LSU is the best matchup, no question about that. In fact, this matchup would be the best of all the BCS bowls, except for the NC game. But I bet Michigan vs ND would be the better TV draw. They always are, so I don't think it would be different this game. Just a matter of what the Rose wants ... the best matchup or the most money.
LSU fans have already put in their order for over 15,000 tickets. That leaves less than 6,000 left. They will go quickly.
approaching 20,000 http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061128/SPORTS0202/611280307/1028 "LSU athletic director Skip Bertman has been busy getting information to the Rose Bowl about LSU fans' large attendance at recent bowls and the fact that LSU's pre-sold bowl tickets this season are approaching 20,000. The Rose Bowl allots a minimum of 20,000 tickets to each school but will give more if needed."
