I haven't seen any of the coverage, but looking at Tiger's stats they don't appear to be bad. Hit 9/14 fairways and GIR was 11/18 & 30 putts. Based on the numbers +1 wasn't that bad.
Overall, the numbers didn't look as treacherous on day one as everyone anticipated. However, there was a ton of rain yesterday apparently and that softened up the greens. If there is no rain today or tomorrow, it could get ugly again on Saturday and Sunday.
I just listened to an interview with Phil & he said the greens were 3 1/2' slower than earlier in the week and the USGA gave them relatively easy pin positions. The USGA will make the course tougher each day. I don't see the winning score being under par.
yeah, there is no way it will be under par. I believe the 1st rd leader last year was a good 2-3 under or so, and the winner ended up 5 over.
I pretty much agree with the consensus that the winning score will be above par. Tiger ended the day 3 shots behind the leader. Not a bad position for him. His first day is usually his worst.
Ideal playing conditions yesterday. Soft greens from the rain, light winds, and relatively easy pin positions. Only 2 players under par. This will be one tough mofo course when it dries out. No rain expected today and tomorrow with a slight chance on Sunday.
Anyone have an opinion on what the cut will be at the end of the second round? Considering the weather and pin placements, I say 12.
Right now, it would be +6 but will certainly go up in the afternoon. Paul Casey is the only golfer on the course under par. He's -4 thru 17.
