I'm inclined to put some of the blame on Crowton for LSU's offensive struggles due to the plays that have been called "relative to" our obviously inferior offensive line play. Today, I watched something very interesting tonight as LSU's pass blocking was better for the most part yet Jordan still couldn't get the damn ball out of his hands, is still taking inexplicably bad sacks, and isn't accurate in crunch time when it matters the most. It's hard for us to say "Quit calling long pass plays" when you can't see on the screen if anyone is actually open or not... or if someone ran the wrong route... etc. It's hard for us to say "X and X play should have been called" when you have no idea what percentage of the playbook is even ABLE to be utilized. It's hard for fans to call for the increased utilization of players when passes are dropped, timeouts have to be wasted, and punts are muffed. Our tight ends and RB's were very effectively utilized today and made several crucial plays in 1 on 1 situations to secure victory. After what I saw today, I'm not so sure it's GC.
I am very happy with the win but like I've said Crowton needs to be gone. JJ deserves some of the blame but it ultimately falls on the coaches. Rewind the game! We did score that first td however we had 2 wr's open earlier if JJ would have thrown the ball. He held on to the ball to long and luckily we got the td anyway! Crowton's plays also set up to of our wr's left out to dry, Lafell drop was one of them. With :59 left in the third Qr JJ locked on a Tolliver I believe and if you look to the left Brandon Lafell was wide open and it would have been a td. It ultimately falls on Crowton, lack of improvenment by JL and JJ averall not to mention our offense is ranked really bad this year. If you are happy with that then so be it but if our record is going to improve next year our offense is going to have to improve. KUDOS, To the defense, they saved the season more than once this year!
I'm not upset about the sacks he's taken this year, that's a part of football, what does upset me is how he takes the sacks. Seems he just bounces in the pocket looking down his recievers until he's surrounded by the defense, and then trie to run out of it. In those situations, he needs to learn to throw the ball away and try again... not take the sack and try again 6-10 yards further back. But he's young... My benching comment earlier was more about putting someone else back there for a down or two to calm him down... I think he'll be a great QB in another season or two, but he still has a lot to learn.
Overall, I'm very pleased with Jefferson's performance. Some of the play calls tonight were bad, others great. Sometimes Jefferson made poor reads or took sacks. All in all, we made some mistakes, but we won the game, and we've got a m,onth to prep for the next one:geaux:
Newsflash...the option doesn't work when you are not an option team especially when you "cleverly" disguise it by putting Shep under center...Hmm...wonder what may be coming....
And yet one of those happens on the first play from scrimmage with a minute left in the ballgame in the exact same scenario as last week. I'll just say that regardless of my opinion of the talent level of what he was left with at QB, I do expect GC to get fired along with Studrawa and McCarthy. The only one who might have his job next year is Yanowsky.
