Yes, our short passing game out in the flat has always been an extension of our passing game. Just think of it as a long pitchout.
Posted this in the game thread, but even though we most likely win tonight and go 4-0, we aren't going far in playoffs without some kind of running game. I mean, we have more running plays for negative or no yards then we do for positive yards. We don't need to be much to keep the defense honest. If we could avg even 3.o yards a carry, it helps the passing game that much more.
Yeah, I am not buying into the O-line is deteriorating and why the hell can't the Saints run the ball doom and gloom mentality. Yes, we need to run it better. That's obvious. And yes, we have had some embarrassing plays where our O-lineman are simply getting blown up. But those plays are still far and few between. This team is averaging 445 yards and 34.5 points per game in it's last two outings (should have been 39.5 save the 10 points we didn't get vs Miami on the missed FG and Sproles fumble). No way you play poorly on the O-line overall if you put up those numbers. The only reason we struggled the first two weeks was due to redzone offense, which had a lot to do with Sean Payton being rusty in play calling. So much for being fucking rusty? lol Eventually we will get Khiry Robinson going and we will run the ball just well enough to keep defenses honest. Let's be clear, the Saints rush offense is mainly built around short passes in the passing game. That's our running game. The days of running out of traditional sets in order to succeed in the NFL are GONE.
25 carries for 68 yards ain't gonna cut it, bro. Even Payton has admitted that. I realize that today's NFL is all about the forward pass, but there are times when the passing game will be stagnant because of the inability to run. Hopefully, we get it on track enough to keep defenses honest, like you said. We don't need to lead the league or anything like that. We just need defenses to respect it just a tad.
Breaking one particular tendency might help the running back. During the Bills game, the announcers said Coach Marrone for the Bills observed that the Saints throw the ball more than 80% of the time when Sproles is in the game. Maybe a few more handoffs to DS might catch the defense unprepared?
Streif has the highest ranking of any offensive tackle in football in pass protection based on Pro Football Focus (website dedicated to analyzing every play of every NFL game). The issue is De La Puente. He should not be starting in the NFL. He had a surprisingly good first year coming out of nowhere but has regressed since then. Constantly getting mauled. He is supposed to be doing the mauling. I think Brown will get better as he gets more experience. He just needs to stay healthy. I say we draft a center or get one in free agency. We need to protect the middle of that pocket, that's when Drew Brees can really get the ball downfield and hurt you.
Strief ranks so high because Brown gets burned so quickly, Strief's guy never has a chance to get there. j/k, but in all honesty, I'm not very high on Brown. I think he's a stopgap until Armstead is ready. I agree with you on DLP, he's been a disappointment, as has Grubbs. Can't help wondering if its a mutual problem; does Grubbs get beat because he's paying too much attention to whether he has to help DLP?
