also with all the complaining about miles and crowton, no one seems to be complaining about coach stud. it's apparent to me that this line never really lived up to expectations last yr and is really struggling this year. last yr they had decent pass blocking but the running game really did suffer especially in the 2nd half of the season. this year is awful. i think most can agree on the fact that JJ is still young and still learning. if he was throwing into coverage all the time people would be complaining about him. instead he's doing the opposite, being overly conservative and careful and people are complaining about him so unless you have an early career like tommy hodson not many people are gonna be happy with qb play. but the o line opening more holes for the ground game as well as giving JJ more time, could do freaking wonders. meerkat is part of it, but i think coach stud is part of it too.
This is a good subject to discuss. Most of the coaches I talk to at any level want to run 70+ plays per game regardless of the offense they run. Most of the teams with this "meerkat" (BTW..great term Grad!) run a true no huddle and average inn the range of 75-85 plays per game. I just looked at our stats and here is what I found. In 2007 we ran an average of 75 plays per game. In 2008 we ran an average of 68 plays per game. In 2009 we are running an average of 60 plays per game. Now look at the one team that we know runs meerkat 100% of the time, Troy. In 2008 they averaged 78 plays per game. In 2007 they averaged 82 plays per game. I think its more than obvious we are not running enough plays. Of course some of that is all the 3 and outs but still, if we are going to run this meerkat we need to be true no huddle. If not we need to be conventional all the time and abandon the look over.
Kentucky did it in the triple overtime game and killed us with it. I don't like it though because if a D knows you they can use it to their advantage and show one thing then blitz after the play is called in.
That is true, but they can't substitute. Crowton is apparently trying to see who the defense has in the game, as well as what coverage they are showing.
Could Barksdale benefit from moving to RG and let Shaw play RT. How about Longeran at Center and Hurst at LG So here is what I am suggesting as a shake up LT-Black LG-Hurst C-Longeran (sp) RG-Barksdale RT-Shaw Any thoughts?
dont laugh too loud, but i think they are ok. 4 yds/rush against maybe that front 7 when the passing game was ineffective is acceptable. pass blocking was ok too. most of the sacks were in obvious long yardage passing downs and their ends are awesome. the UF secondary and JJ get credit for several of the sacks.
This is a good point that I never really thought of. The fact that the meerkat style keeps the offensive linemen in position too long that it hampers the line is a theory that is very plausible. I don't know how else to explain the decline of great players like Ciron Black. Coming into this year, Ciron was a 1st round draft pick. I no longer think that he is a 1st round pick. He's not the same player and he is healthy (last year he was way better and he had an ankle injury the entire season). In the ULL game, I saw a 265 lb Defensive lineman shove Ciron back like a ragdoll and Ciron landed on Jordan Jefferson when he had the ball in the backfield and fell to the ground. B/c of the loss of yardage on that play, we ended up kicking a 52 yard field goal (and subsequently making it). Anyways, I think that this is a very good point and probably the answer to the question that I've been asking myself all year long which is why does our O-Line suck so bad this year when even CLM (who was an O lineman himself) said that this is the best O-line he's ever coached (or something of that nature). On a separate thought, I think Florida runs this meerkat themselves and I don't think that they have the woes that we have on the O-line. I wonder why that is?
