Because that is not realistic of what is needed to win a National title. Bama's past 3 titles were in the 30's and 40's. The expectation should be a sound football team that can do what it needs to win. Mistake free. Efficient O. Strong Running game. Strong SP teams, and a top 10 D. This marker of the best O ever is misplaced and a pipe dream. Better of trying to find unicorns.
nothing wrong with the O. they always fluctuate with the roster. get a talented, experienced QB and the O will be good. just start managing the roster better so the valleys dont last 4 yrs.
In Houston, there have been discussions about the Texans losing Vonta Leach to the Ravens a couple of years ago. Leach is possibly the best blocking FB in the NFL. I recall someone mentioning towards the end of the season (or beginning of playoffs) that Ray Rice actually had a much higher YPC in single back sets than with Leach in the game as a blocking FB. When I heard this stat, I thought that it was likely due to the down/distance. For example, 3rd and 1 would be more likely to have Leach in the game and a 1.5 yd gain is a successful play but brings down the average. Like everyone else, I'd like to see the TEs used more effectively. On the other hand, I read somewhere (maybe in this thread) that Cam prefers to throw more to the sidelines rather than in the middle of the field to limit INTs. With us having a strong armed QB and a lot of talented WRs, maybe it makes more sense to not throw to the TEs as often as I'd prefer.
I hear ya, I just hope you are wrong.....time will tell and it should tell this season with a seasoned experienced QB.
TE's are great for working the sidelines. They can usually get there before the LB covering them can, and they have height advantages over corners that give them the edge over jump balls.
Cameron has had a couple of pro-bowl TE's. Antonio Gates spent a couple of years as the best TE in football under Cameron. This was at or around the same time Ladanian Tomlinson was setting the TD record for non-QBs. Dennis Pitta was very valuable the last two years for the Ravens. TE's eat well under Cameron.
FWIW, from what I've seen of Cameron, he plays to his players' strengths. People like to point towards Ray Rice's lack of carries as a detriment to him, but these people also tend to forget that Ray Rice is the best off ball RB in the NFL. I'm personally hoping for a top 25 offense in a few years, but I'd be very happy with a top 50 within the next 2 years also.
