Timely adjustments to elements of the game plan that aren't working. I don't think that's asking for too much out of a year 1 OC.
Landry and OBJ are like having two Lance Moores, except i don't remember Lance having all the drops. Landry and OBJ could be elite slot WRs, but we need at least two good Rueben Randle type WRs to go with Landry/OBJ We don't have a Colston (big 6-4, 225 clutch WR that can catch anything thrown his way). We dont have a Graham (big 6-7, 265 athletic TE that can catch anything thrown his way) Our offensive line only has one star in Collins at G. We need a new LT and C. And the other two spots are going to two sophomores Alexander and Turner, unless Williford beats out Turner or takes Collins spot if Collin moves outside Our QB has potential but he's still a question mark with his inconsistency Our RBs are the only part of the offense were we have elite talent
I can agree about the drops, but I think OBJ has much better open-field skills than a Lance Moore, and I think Landry has better ball skills than a Lance Moore. We don't have a Graham, but who does? TE has been a relatively weak point recently. Collins is our only 5-star on the line, but the rest are 4-stars with maybe the exception of Porter(?). Look at the running game success last year, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to protect the QB as well, in my opinion at least. Alexander, I will give a pass to because he was a froshy last year, but this year I think he needs to step up. RB is RB. Now when I look at Mett and the games against 'Bama through the end of the season, I think he looked very capable. I think Miles doesn't want to do anything but run unless he thinks we can't beat a team with running+defense. Mett tore up the 'Bama secondary, which I think demonstrated how well he can play if they let him sling it. Elite? No. Top-40 talent? Yes. I agree the talent isn't elite everywhere, but top-40 isn't elite in my eyes, it's just pretty good.
Whether we like it or not, Bama is the bar that has been set. Their offense has been around the middle of the pack every year, despite having even better talent than us. It's just the scheme...it's self-limiting in terms of sheer numbers. Someone said imposing our will is the key concept, and I agree. I want an offense that can do what it needs to do when it needs to do it...no more, no less.
If we played in the WAC, top 40 would be reasonable, but in the SEC, you only finish top 40 if you have elite talent on offense Last year only 21 big conference teams finished top 40 in ypg 6 - Big XII 5 - ACC 4 - Pac 12 4 - SEC 2 - Big Ten The four SEC teams: aTm - Heisman and SEC POY QB, two first rounders and 1st Team All-SEC at OTs, #1 WR was 6-5, 218, great stable of RBs Tenn - Bray, Hunter (6-4, All-SEC), Patterson (6-3, All-SEC), TE Riveria (1st Team All SEC), and OL Thomas (All-SEC) Bama - McCarron (All-SEC), Lacy (All-SEC), Yeldon, probably the best OL in history (three 1st Team All-SEC), freshman sensation WR Cooper Georgia - Murray (All-SEC in 2011), WR Brown (6-5), TE Lynch (6-5), two 6-3 WRs, two freshmen sensations at RB (one All-SEC), OL Burnette (All-SEC)
That's a very good point I neglected. That makes me lower it to top-50; we should be in the top-50 in the country(whether we will or not is another question). I do understand how good the defense we play are game in and game out, but the talent on offense should overcome that to some degree.
Just let Cameron run the last 3 minutes of each half. Les is a man of many virtues . . . clock management is not one of them.
That's another thing. Despite having elite talent at RB, we were only #67 in the NCAA with a 4.28 rushing ypc (in 2011 we were #27, in 2007 we were #18) 2012 aTm was #2 with 5.90, Florida St was #5 with 5.62 Bama was #6 with 5.59, Nebraska was #13 with 5.36 Wisconsin was #18 with 5.21 Ohio St was #20 with 5.20 Southern Cal was #26 Georgia was #30 Notre Dame was #30 Oklahoma was #34 ... ... ... LSU was #67
The key is "efficient". Cam isn't going to turn Zach into Timmy Chang out of the blue and les sure as hell isn't going to morph into June Jones anytime soon. Give me something that is efficient, something that isn't so GD predictable and stale. Something that can move the ball when we need to. Offensive rankings don't do a lot for me as long as our D is consistent enough this team should be fine with slight improvement from the O. I will be happy if we aren't leading the entire country, to include the D2 schools in 3 and outs.
