So you subscribe to the "If it aint broke, break it" school of thought. I had questions about Stud's Olines in 08 and 09, but have seen marked improvement since then.
I don't think Stud should be kicked off the staff. However, all options should be carefully considered. If an outstanding time tested OC is available that is a good fit we should consider hiring him. Les is loyal to a fault and I don't really expect him to remove Stud from the OC duties. Winning a title, going undefeated, etc., is no reason to stand pat. Les made a mistake when he went with co-defensive coordinators after Pelini left and that didn't turn out so well. Granted this is a little different, but with Kragthorp's health the way it is he could leave at any time. Without Kragthorpe, how well would Stud do? This was his offense, not Stud's, and it seems as if it is more of a team approach right now. I know Miles supposedly likes a fairly conservative, grind it out, wear them down offense, but a more explosive offense would be nice.
New to the board, but here is my 2 cents. Leave Studthorpe alone. The play calling has not been the issue, but rather the execution by two average QBs and a, sometimes, banged up offensive line.
QB is still the major issue even though there is marked improvement in Lee and JJ.. THey still aren't up to the rest of the LSU squad as far as proven talent is concerned. While JJ is the best fit, IMO, for 2011 with the ability to run & pass with our VERY good run game, I really hope Mett is all they say he is. We really need a pure pocket passer for 2012 IMO.
Wow, I am shocked with the responses in this thread. And I was a HUGE skeptic of Studwara coming into this season. I thought we were in big trouble offensively once again. Coach Stud should win OC of the year award, even with the results from the Bama game (we ended up with the most yards given up by Bama this season). To go from the worst quarterbacking to the best in the SEC in 1 year is beyond comprehension. Obviously Krags has a lot to do with it, but Stud has handled Lee with kid gloves and took them off at just the right time (late in the MSU game and into the WVU game). He treated a tenuous situation and turned it into a strength for this offense. He will have a much more legit QB in Mett next year and the sky is the limit. I fully expect this offense to explode with 420-450 yards per game avg and over 40 points per game. It could rival the most prolific offense ever in the history of LSU football statistically, the 2007 Tigers team.
AND...after I read that break down of the off balanced speed option play call in OT, that is just down right winning the chess match! Congrats to Stud!
People aren't understanding that Stud is working with QB play that doesn't quite keep us balanced enough offensively (this was played out in the Alabama game). With Mett commanding the offense and becoming a QB to be feared will make our vaunted running attack that much better. I suspect we'll run for somewhere in the vicinity of 200-220 yards next season. And pass for the same amount and probably a little more. Randle, Beckham (will be much improved, which is scary), Shepard, Boone, Wright and Fobbs. That's some weapons we will see used to their full capabilities.
