I am not sure of the limit but we will sign about the same amount of recruits we did last year. 26 or more with the 3 players booted off the team and I suspect we will over sign with a few recruits struggling with their grades. Plus we will have a few from last recruiting class resign this year or the next.
Right, but if I am not mistaken LSU can award more than 25 schollies if we have some available to give. So their is not a limit on how many we can give each year.:thumb:
The way I understand it, there are only so many schollies allowed per team...I think 85. You can't just have 25 per class...that would be 100...Fr-Sr. Some years, you only have 18 or 19...just depends on how many departing scholly players there are. Once they depart, the # of total scholly players we have goes down(duh)...and the difference is made up in the next recruiting class.........I think. So anyway, I was just wondering how many were going to be available come February. I know it's impossible to know...as we may lose underclassmen...or have players quit or be removed from the team...which would free up schollies. But aside from that...
It's the infamous 85/25 rule. You may only have 85 players on scholarship playing football at any given time, and may only add 25 new scholarships per year. Schools oversign anticipating having a few fail to qualify. If they end up with more than 25, they have to convince someone to walk-on or wait until the Spring to enroll.
Thought you might find this interesting on several levels. This is an article from a guy who has been following this particular aspect of recruiting for years and writes for the SC Forum. As you can tell, even after several decades, it's something nearly impossible to "nail down". It used to be (1960s and 70s) that we marveled at the successful Nebraska system of redshirting freshmen, building them up over a couple of years in their famous weight program and then unleashing them onto the football world as stronger, more mature players. Most of the people I talked to at the time thought that was a good system to emulate. But Pete brought in a new way of managing his players. He tells incoming players that they should be ready to play when they arrive because they probably will not redshirt. Last season, even with a roster full of talent, he played 17 freshmen. The impact has been that the playing roster is now much deeper and blue chip players come here because they want a chance at immediate playing time in a quality program. We had some down recruiting years in the 80s and 90s, sometimes we didn't ever fill our scholarship limit - some years we weren't even close. Many top Southern California players chose to go elsewhere and roster shortages occurred at more than one position. In the 90s, I made a national roster study of the 6 top I-formation programs and came up with what I called an ideally "balanced roster". I did this for my own amusement and so I would know if we were recruiting smartly (which we frequently we not). It was based on what was working for those programs and I published my conclusions on the web to fit within the 85 scholarship limit: like 4 QBs; 9 WRs; 7 DEs; etc. Those ideal roster numbers also went out the window when Pete arrived. As he hit his stride after a couple of years, he recruited players that could play more than one position very well. Position changes have always been a part of the game but, in my opinion, Pete has made "athletic type" players a priority, so he has more options when emergencies occur. And, quit frankly, we used to have several, what we called "practice players", who took up a scholarship but were not game quality. Now that's history. This Scholarship Math column has traditionally been about how many scholarship opening we will have for the next LOI day. Over the years I found that people were frequently counting the walk-ons as scholarship players and therefore reached erroneous conclusions. It is also easy to misinterpret the "Senior" designation on the Roster. This can be misleading since most Seniors have eligibility left. So I now begin by listing the scholarship players who are expected to be in school this fall. These are the scholarship players I am counting: QB - 6: Booty, Sanchez, McDonald, Green, Corp and Mustain TB - 10: Dennis, Reed, Washington, Gable, Moody, Johnson, Bradford, McKnight, Green and Tyler FB - 2: Havili and Campbell WR - 8: Turner, Hazelton, Patterson, Ausberry, Carswell, Holland, Williams and Johnson TE - 6: Davis, Thompson, Miller, McCoy, Ellison and Cameron C - 3: Spanos, Howell, O?Dowd OG - 5: Byers, Rachal, Malu, Herring, Heberer OT - 5: Baker, Radovich, Brown, Lewis, Coleman CB - 5: T. Thomas, K. Thomas, Harris, Joseph and Wright S - 7: Ellison, Mays, Pinkard, McCurtis, Harris, Jones and Rowe DT - 7: Ellis, Moala, Parsons, Spicer, Harris, Simmons and Tupou DE - 7: Jackson, Moore, Morrow, Washington, Griffen, Henderson and Reardon LB - 10: Rivers, Cushing, Williams, Maiava, Maualuga, Matthews, Brown, Morgan, Galippo and Smith Special Teams - 2: Buehler and Collins The NCAA football scholarship limit is 85 and there are 83 players on the above list. There were 85 until Josh Tatum decided to transfer out of the program and Lawrence Miles was listed under "Squadmen lost" on the new Roster. Good luck to Josh and Lawrence. So Pete has two more rides to accept transfers or to reward a deserving walk-ons. This roster has three transfers who by NCAA rule count on our scholarship limit but cannot play until 2008. They are Damian Williams WR from Arkansas, Mitch Mustain QB from Arkansas and Jordan Cameron TE from BYU. Of the 83, 18 are using their last year of eligibility. They are: Spanos, Malu, Baker, Radovich, Fred Davis, Thompson, Dennis, Reed, Ch. Washington, Booty, McDonald, Ellis, Jackson, Morrow, Rivers, T. Williams, T. Thomas and long snapper Collins. We thought we were going to have 19 but DL Chris Barrett was declared academically ineligible for his final year. BYU TE transfer Cameron was added to the team in that spot but since he is an underclassman, the number of scholarships available decreases by one. So we know we will have the 18 scholarships from the above list plus any medical casualties, academic casualties, citizenship casualties, transfers or early departures for the NFL. As for the NFL, we have 18 juniors, anyone of whom could have a terrific season and thereby be encouraged to enter the draft. Among those most likely, in my opinion, are Maualuga, Turner, Cushing and Rachal. Taking all variables into account and based on past history, I now project between 21 and 25 scholarship openings next February.
That's the kind of info I'm looking for Vball...'cept for LSU. I know of the 85/25 rule...but does anybody know how many we have available...barring early draft entries and the like...for '08???
No, you just cant have more than 85 schollie players on the team. So if you have 63 schollie players after graduation and the draft you can take 22 players. Sometimes you can take more if a player greyshirts.
