I agree. Remember when Clinton became president and overlooked a bad economy in favor of controversial social issues? He had to be reminded "It's the economy stupid." With that said, having spent 8 years in active duty and 12 years in the reserves, I see no problem with getting rid of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. The only real problem in the past with allowing gays into the military was that they presented a security risk (made them vulnerable to blackmail). However, if military service is open to homosexuals, that ceases to be an issue. The only other argument against allowing gays to serve in the military was that it would hurt "moral." I never quite understood that argument. How does it hurt morale? The same argument could have been made against Blacks at one time. Homosexuals are American citizens and should not be denied the right to serve their country. It is really a silly issue since gays have served in the military during war and peace for the past 200 years. It is time to take the blinders off.

saw this story today and thought it was interesting. it brings up the question, how do you handle "dont ask dont tell" when the military member plays totally by the rules, but is outed by a third party?

That one is easy - once the information is officially brought to the attention of commanders, their hands are tied.

Don't ask, don't tell is not a good policy, regardless of which side of the aisle you sit on.

Gay military members who have legal documents in their houses that would prove that they are gay - well, they're not thinking straight.

    Badump -bump. crash.

It goes beyond the morality. There is a general order at all levels of command which prohibits fraternization between male and female while deployed. If deployed military members are married and in the same unit they may be afforded certain accommodations as long as it does not interfere with operations. The general rule, however, is male and females have separate facilities. In other words, males and females do not sleep or shower together. If males and females "hook up", which does happen, it is in secrecy. If homosexual males and females are thus allowed to serve openly, this changes the dynamic. Equating this issue to the color of someone's skin is ludicrous.

Well, since fraternization is prohibited, I would imagine that the homosexuals would fraternize secretly, as well. And I certainly understand how fraternization is a problem. But is it so huge a problem as to require prohibiting 10% of the citizenry from serving at all? Why can't commanders deal with gay fraternization, case by case, as they do with other fraternization cases? Discharging problem soldiers should never be an issue. But discharging good soldiers for fear of possible future problems doesn't seem right, somehow.

When I was in the military, service women were assumed to be lesbian until proven otherwise.

i was referring to the general population, where the 10% number is obviously absurd.

Can someone please clarify? Are we talking about real life lesbians, or porno movie lesbians? I only ask because it will have a pretty significant influence on my opinion in the matter.
