    I'm sure Putin is quaking in his boots. (LOL) I'm reading Tom Clancy's latest Jack Ryan book and it is eerily similar. Seriously there is little we can do militarily but like with Czechoslovakia in 1938/9 if Putin is appeased here I fear we will see a Poland somewhere down the road. Ukraine is a divided nation with about a 50/50 split pro Russian/pro European. There is a long history of Russian involvement in Ukraine but Ukrainian freedom fighters fought the Soviet occupation until the mid 1950s so it will be ugly.

    Are you serious? Putin is trying to reconstitute the Soviet Union. The West cannot stand by idly and condone it.

    When has he not?

    Ukrainians mostly are virulently anti-Russian, but in 75 years of Soviet occupation many Russians relocated to eastern Ukraine. I doubt if we see a Czechoslovakia '68 or Hungary '56 style total Russian occupation. What the Russians want here is a divided Ukraine. Not just to weaken it. Their main interest is in the Black Sea Ukrainian harbors where the Russian navy has its only warm-water ports. They will try to instigate a civil war between eastern and western Ukraine and then intervene to "protect" the Russian speaking western part which conveniently includes the Crimean ports.

    Without this, it is only a matter of time before Ukraine becomes more westernized and possibly joins NATO. The Russians will go to war to protect their naval bases in the Crimea. They would prefer to avoid this because it will only provoke responses from NATO including possibly closing the Turkish straits. It would also make eastern Ukraine overwhelmingly pro-western and anti-Russian. It could turn into a very big shit sandwich and everyone will have to take a bite.

    Why is this our problem? I mean, their country is obviously divided. I know about the treaty and all that jazz, but why force a country one way with it is split down the middle?

    When has he not, Red? You mean when has he not backed his words? You can't be serious. The mans foreign policy is closer to feckless than forthright.
    • Syria red line - several of them
    • We're gonna get those movie haters that killed our ambassador
    • We back you Morsi;
    • We back you military ousting Morsi
    Obama was holding a stronger hand of cards but is again getting schooled by Putin. It's embarrassing.

    We don't live in isolation. Our allies even less so. As Putin brings countries under his control it directly effects our allies economic conditions - which impact us.

    Lame partisan rhetoric.

    False. Just one red line. He told Syria that they could not use chemical weapons and they haven't, in fact they are shipping them out to be destroyed.
    • All made-up quotes. You are very misguided about Egypt and Libya and that is not my problem. Obama is not handling Egypt any differently than any prudent President would do. What are you suggesting he should have done? Another invasion? Be specific.
    How is that? Putin is the one with his dick out and facing international condemnation. This is the diplomatic tit-for-tat that goes on whenever either side does something the other disapproves of strongly. You have to take a position if you are a Superpower. Obama has done so.

    I am not surprised that you are embarassed.
