Houston Chronicle: AUSTIN — Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is in talks with Auburn about its head- coaching vacancy, a person close to Leach said Thursday. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/college/6148302.html
Birmingham News: One coach who is not being considered is Texas Tech's Mike Leach. ... Leach, who insiders say expressed an interest in Auburn, is not being considered. Auburn was interested in Nutt and Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, and possibly a few others. Nutt met with Athletics Director Pete Boone and university chancellor Robert Khayat. http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/12/auburn_is_considering_houston.html
If I'm Auburn, I'd want Mike Leach. Yes, he might suck on D, but I'm sure he'd keep Rhoads at Auburn, a pretty good DC. The Birmingham News says Auburn wants Houston Nutt or Jimbo Fister... both those two guys don't have the big-name superstar appeal that Leach has. I think Leach at Auburn would get a lot of big-time recruits excited about going to (or staying committed to) Auburn... a lot more so than if Nutt or Fisher was the head coach.
He wont ever get it in Alabama unless he takes Sabans job. Ole Miss and Auburn are similar jobs, just that one is going up and the other is going down. Personality wise I think it is the best they can do. Nutt would do well at a school like Auburn.
The Mobile Press-Register, today: Leach is thought to be among the top candidates for the Auburn job...It was reported Wednesday that Auburn representatives earlier this week made contact through intermediaries with people close to Leach, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and possibly Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. ... The list of potential candidates to replace Tuberville includes a mixture of mindsets and philosophies. Among those known for offense are Leach, Boise State's Chris Petersen, Tulsa's Todd Graham, Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, Air Force's Troy Calhoun and Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson, whose spread-option running game is reportedly a favorite of former Auburn coaching great Pat Dye. Possible candidates with defensive backgrounds include North Carolina's Butch Davis, Texas defensive coordinator and former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Wake For est's Jim Grobe and TCU's Gary Patterson, whose Horned Frogs are ranked No. 2 in the country in total defense. http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/sports/122847213038570.xml&coll=3
