ND beat Stanford, and had four other teams on their schedule that were supposed to be really good (USC, Oklahoma, Michigan, Michigan St.). They cannot be held accountable for their opponents underperforming expectations. They didn't lose to Bama because they weren't tested. They lost because they are smaller, slower and weaker at every position.
It does say a lot for the SEC when you have the ,supposedly, number 1 defense in the nation get manhandled by a team that barely squeaked through the SEC schedule. Bama was a few points and lucky breaks away from playing in a lesser bowl. LSU Georgia and Texas A&M all gave Bama a run for their money. Like another poster said " steel sharpens steel, butter sharpens nothing". The SEC defenses proved to be the steel used to sharpen the SEC offenses. Just ask Oklahoma and notre dame. Next year guys. Always next year.
That's a reasonable analysis. Notre Dame is so overrated. I guess Lou Holtz was right, this Notre Dame team was one of destiny. They were indeed destined to be taken to the woodshed by an SEC team. It's a bit surprising that Lou Holtz survived the game.
We can only hope. Did anyone else notice the Catholic priests that were shown viewing the game in a return from one of the commercial breaks? They just couldn't phone it up quickly enough. Would it be fitting if they were to paint a brazen frown upon the face of touchdown Jesus? It could serve as a daily reminder of their demolition in last night's game. It may even rekindle memories of their domination by LSU.
Personally, I think the whole "Touchdown Jesus" thing is a bit arrogant, bordering on blasphemous. Are they saying that Jesus is a football fan, and that he ONLY roots for ND? They deserve their many embarrassments.
And I expect it to continue until they finally learn. One day, kids will stop wanting to go there. As the years go by, their "legendary" status becomes more and more tarnished, and their trophy case gets a little more dusty.
As for as I'm concerned, I hope those lessons of humility continue. Just as I'm sure that many of you do as well.
God forbid if Notre Dame were to go undefeated next year. We can only hope that the teams in front of them don't lose and bump up the media's darling team. Or the voters can just recall this year's humiliation.
