10 poorest Cities Poverty in Our Cities. City, State, % of People Below the Poverty Level 1. Detroit , MI 32.5% 2. Buffalo , NY 29.9% 3. Cincinnati , OH 27.8% 4. Cleveland , OH 27.0% 5. Miami , FL 26.9% 5. St. Louis , MO 26.8% 7. El Paso , TX 26.4% 8. Milwaukee , WI 26.2% 9. Philadelphia , PA 25.1% 10. Newark , NJ 24.2% U.S. Census Bureau, 2006 American Community Survey, August 2007 What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common? Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961; Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954; Cincinnati, OH (3rd)...since 1984; Cleveland, OH (4th)...since 1989; Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor; St. Louis, MO (6th).....since 1949; El Paso, TX (7th) has never had a Republican mayor; Milwaukee , WI (8th)...since 1908; Philadelphia , PA (9th)...since 1952; Newark , NJ (10th)...since 1907. Einstein once said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." "You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves." Abraham Lincoln
What a laughable correlation. People read something on the internet and believe it without checking the facts. Here is a better correlation to explain the poverty levels in those cities: Minority population: Detroit = 80% Buffalo = 38% Cincinatti = 39% Cleveland = 53% Miami = 85% St. Louis = 50% El Paso = 79% Milwaukee = 43% Philadelphia = 48% Newark = 87% Clearly minority population and poverty are related and have been show to be by many lines of evidence. What evidence is there that Democratic mayors cause poverty? None. In fact, the causality is the reverse. Minority populations tend to elect Democrats. But the premise is even more flawed in suggesting that the most poverty exists because democratic mayors exist there. If that were true, one would expect that the cities with the least poverty would be governed by republicans . . . but it ain't. They are mostly governed by democrats, too! Cities with the least impoverished populations: 1. Sacramento = democratic mayor 2. San Diego= republican mayor since 2005 after two democratic mayors 3. Washington DC = democratic mayor 4. Trenton = democratic mayor 5. Phoenix = democratic mayor 6. Raleigh = democratic mayor 7. Knoxville = republican mayor since 2005 in a city with a long democratic tradition 8. Nashville = democratic mayor 9. Hartford = democratic mayor 10. Minneapolis = democratic mayor
I have been to all those cities and most of them suck. Especially Hartford. I hate their stupid airport. Minneapolis is the least sucky, but that is because it is only a few hours from my favorite steak house.
Funny, Ville Platte is the city in the US with the highest poverty rate in the country, but it has one of my favorite barbeque joints -- Pig Stand.
Gawd, my dad loved to go eat there when we'd knock off on Saturdays. That GREASY stove would get to me when I'd walk in but the food WAS jam up. They've given the place a facelift but I haven't been. If you're ever in the area and have time I'd love to treat you to lunch there.
The aforementioned impoverished cities have never had a GOP mayor or haven't had one in 40 years. Correllate that MFer.
I just did, Homer. D'oh! cum hoc ergo propter hoc. Correlation between two variables does not imply that one causes the other. Cities that black and hispanic will never have a republican governor. What you haven't established is any causal evidence that democratic mayors produce poverty. It's likley the other way 'round. And guess what? Even cities with the lowest poverty rates elect democrats.
